I have this small Ikea floating shelf, that my dad installed a few months ago but it recently fell off the wall. It looked like the holes he drilled were too big, as the anchors fell off.

Now I know next to nothing about DYI stuff like this... so I'm wondering, what type of anchors do I use (the wall appears to be drywall)? How do I figure out the size of the anchor and the size of the drill I should use?

They keyholes on the back of these things can be a real pain. You need to make sure your screw head diameter fits in the keyhole nicely, but also need to match that to a drywall anchor. Because the screw protrudes from the wall a bit sometimes it's best to get a slightly longer screw so you make sure it fully engages the anchor. Make sure you use the right drill bit size indicated for your wall anchors, and a sharp drill bit (don't use masonry bits that have that spade tip because I find they leave sloppier holes in drywall but are often included in the package with wall anchors). Don't let the drill bit spin in the hole excessively either, a quick in and out minimizes the chance or you widening the hole too much. Find a screw in the maximum diameter you can with a head that works and then match that to an anchor made for that screw size (#8, #10 etc). Generally the bigger you go the stronger it is. Only let the screw protrude from the wall by the minimum amount required, if it's too far out the shelf will sag and put extra stress on your anchor. Finally, be extremely precise with your measurements. Make sure your line is level and the holes are perfectly spaced. Use an awl or something pointy to mark the center of each hole before drilling, this prevents the bit from skipping across the wall and your hole ending up in the wrong spot.

Drywall screws are to attach drywall to studs not shelves to drywall. Best practice would be to locate a stud and have at least one screw in wood. The other screw could be a molly bolt or the screw in type of drywall anchor , not the hammer in type. You could use the holes in the wall now and do the screw in type.
