This is correct. Some drawer units such as Hemnes have the hole pre-drilled, but for the Malm you need to make your own. Can use an awl or a nail/screw plus hammer to make a divot and help get it started. More on reddit.com

It seems to be the tracks on the unit, not the drawers. When we try to close the drawers they stop about 1.5 inches from being flush closed. We've tightened the screws as much as possible and it helps a bit, but the drawers are still getting caught/stuck and we have to use a lot of force to fully close the drawers or open them. The tracks on the bottom seem fine, as every drawer is able to fit in there perfectly, and they look identical to the other sets of tracks. Will this get better with time and repetitive use or should we return this dresser?

I know this is an old thread but I just had the same problem with a 3 drawer Malm and the problem was the screws on the drawer tracks were not flush.

I’m having the same exact issue for the second time around. About a month ago, I bought four black 4-drawer malm dressers (one was an open box return, and the other three were brand new from a different batch/supplier number). Normally, I would be hesitant to buy a product that someone else may have tried to assemble, but I was desperate as the supply chain has been unpredictable, and Ikea has been selling out of these dressers within hours of receiving new shipments. Although I was concerned about issues with the one returned dresser, there were no issues assembling that one. The other three, from a different batch, all had drawers that either didn’t close all the way, or drawers that jammed completely, and remained jammed, within an inch of closing. I arranged a return and pickup of the three problem dressers, and I appreciate that Ikea covered the cost of pickup. However, a member of the after care team said this was likely user-assembly error, and not a product defect. I explained to her that the individual who assembled these for me had no issue assembling the one open-box returned dresser from a different batch. I also expressed that over the course of several years, my handyman has assembled a half dozen malm dressers of various sizes, malm storage beds, and over a dozen floor-to-ceiling Besta cabinets for me with no issues, so I don’t think it was user assembly error. I think it’s a product defect, specifically, an issue with the rails attached to the actual dresser itself. Once in stock again, I ordered three more 4-drawer replacement dressers, and unfortunately these were from the same batch/supplier as the original problematic ones. As Ikea would not refund me the cost of assembly of the defective dressers, I did not want to pay my handyman again just to experience the same issue. So I tried assembling these myself and low and behold, I’m having the same exact issues again. All four drawers slide perfectly into the bottom slot, but each drawer experiences issues sliding into the first three slots of the one dresser I’ve assembled thus far. Has anyone figured out a fix for this? I don’t want to continue driving to Ikea just to see if they have a different batch of these dressers in stock, and I don’t want to keep assembling defective dressers. Based on what you’ve all shared, this doesn’t appear to be a singular experience, nor does it appear to be user assembly error. Thoughts?

I've seen a few posts on here about problems with Malm dresser drawers. Has anybody successfully fixed them?
I just assembled the four drawer dresser, and it went great, until I tried to put the drawers in. The bottom fits great, works great, no matter which drawer I put in that position. But the other three don't work: They stick out about 1.5 inches and won't closer all the way.
I used gentle force to see if I could get the top drawer to go in all the way. Now the top drawer is stuck closed. It only opens about 1.5 inches. No idea how to get it unstuck.
Has anybody figured this out? It's so frustrating. I spent so much time meticulously assembling this.

Hey guys! I had the same issues with it. Turns out it’s the child lock mechanism that makes the drawer get stuck. So I had to force the drawers open with all of my strength and then use a flathead screwdriver to pop off the plastic black locking mechanisms with it. I tightened all the screws just in case too. After that the drawers slid in and out just fine. It was so frustrating though.
