I’ve done this more than a few times and have never had to pay duties. I just declare “a bunch of IKEA stuff,” CBP takes a peek and on I go. Tip: IKEA Boucherville is closer and easier to get to than IKEA Montreal. As far as pricing, it can really depend per item. Some items at IKEA Canada are much more expensive, some are much cheaper, just by them being in Canada - before even factoring in taxes. I tend it make a spreadsheet and compare prices on any items I’m looking at (after converting to USD), I’ll then factor in the tax rates for Quebec and Massachusetts and see what makes the most sense. My wife and I are planning to go to IKEA in montreal in a few weeks, bringing along a uhaul trailer and likely spending what I consider a lot of money, likely around $1,000 to upgrade a lot of our furniture (yes, cheap balsa wood furniture is an upgrade!)
I see conflicting information online about paying duty fees for goods purchased in Canada. Does anyone know what the threshold is? Also, I've heard mixed things about the value of going across the border...the U.S. dollar is doing ok compared to 2009, but quebec has a 13% sales tax. Has anyone gone through this process recently and think it's worth it?

Parking at Ikea Boucherville is difficult, on the weekends at least. I think it would be really hard with a trailer. The loading area is also not trailer friendly. I've only been to Ikea Montreal once and can't remember the parking situation there. On the other hand Ikea Stoughton (MA) has really easy parking for a trailer. Another thing to consider are foreign transaction fees on your credit card (most have them, a few don't). We've brought stuff back from Montreal, exceeding our limit a number of times and never been charged duty. And never lied to CBP about it. I've received a range of responses from CBP, from a lecture about the origins of goods you buy, to disgusted grumbling about being over our limit, to just not caring. My take on it is if it's not too much over the limit and clearly for personal use that they aren't going to bother charging you. But if you have a trailer full of stuff that may be hard for them to turn a blind eye to. If it were me, I'd go to MA. After taking border delays into account it's only about 3 hours more, but much less stress and straightforward. Also, if you need anything from NH for your renovations, it's tax free and on the way. If you need warranty help or are missing parts it's going to be easier to work with Ikea US than Ikea CA. If you go to Montreal and there are more than one of you, you can take $200US worth of stuff and pay for it in one transaction. Then at least that portion of the purchase should be tax free when that person claims it. TLDR; I'd fill a trunk at Montreal Ikea, but I'd fill a trailer at Stoughton Ikea.
