Hacking the IKEA Pax into a Fully Custom Closet - Erin Kestenbaum
February 16, 2021 - This isn’t to say that they aren’t helpful to maximize storage, but it’s very challenging to make them look seamless in a high-end custom closet. This limited our options down to hanging rods, drawers and shelves. For reference, the room is 14.6′ long by 6.5′ wide, and we opted for the deeper IKEA Pax units on one side (23″ deep) and shallower units on the other wall (13″ deep), which allowed for a wide walkway between the two units.

May 25, 2023 - As soon as you walk into our closet, you can see the side panel of the wardrobe on the left side. This certainly could have been left as it, but it didn’t take much work to make it substantially nicer. More 1×4 was nailed to the side panel to mimic the fronts of the glass doors.

December 10, 2023 - After using the IKEA Pax Planning Tool to plan the exact layout of our closet, I was able to start designing how I would add to the closet to put my own spin on it and give it a little more of a custom look. Of course, I turned to my favorite rendering tool, Homestyler, and mocked up what the finished closet would look like. Now that, my friends, is a damn good looking closet. ikeaikea hackpaxpax closetclosetorganizationcustom closetcloset makeover

June 10, 2025 - The fact that PAX and Kitchen Planner don’t integrate prevents me from having a unified drawing. ... You could also do all of the 14” ones and avoid the 22” all together. You don’t have to use the ikea rod options. I ordered customer cut rods off Amazon, for the brackets you can use what is there or screw in between the holes. There was another person who posted his closet and he did all 14” depth for his wife and he used his own rod options doing the drill his own hole.

r/ikeahacks on Reddit: Ikea Pax Walk in Wardrobe Build
December 30, 2024 -

Just finished our walk in wardrobe with Pax. We ordered the Pax end of last year and it was still Pax version 1 - so unsure how this will apply to version 2.

Main issues with the room was that we had an asymmetrical chimney breast that could not be removed, this left a small recess on one side of the room.

A 50cm pax wardrobe fitted perfectly into the recess - but not enough space for a corner unit without losing a lot of the room. Therefore we created a small space - just big enough to step Into to allow access into this 50cm wardrobe. Another wardrobe was then continued along the adjoining wall.

The wardrobe was built onto a plinth - so could add skirting around it, also allowed me to create a platform to make access to the wardrobe in the recess easier, and to give a built-in look.

Added lights and cabling (after a long delay as Ikea discontinued and recontinued the Oversidan lights half-way through!). I made sure to leave an exposed electrical socket where we had left the gap for the recess wardrobe for easy access.

I also added an 18mm MDF board to the outside end of the wardrobe to allow me to mount a mirror more securely (this rested on the plinth - so not relying on the pax to hold the weight)

Put skirting around the plinth (needed a few bits of trim to fill out the gap left by the kickboard).

Then added a frame on top to support coving.

Finally added strips along the vertical joints of the wardrobe to make everything seem one piece.

Used Iron Mountain by Benjamin Moore in Satin to colour match the Ikea dark grey almost perfectly

As the wardrobes ended being quite tall due to the plinth - we have a small fold-flat step ladder stored in the corner recess. Also added a couple of hooks for bag storage.

Things I would have changed:

I would have installed the wiring for my lighting before fixing the wardrobe in space as it limited the routing options. My hand was forced by the lack of stock of Oversidan at the time.

This left a few ugly exposed wires. - I’ve covered them with masking tape and then painted them with matching paint. Works ok, does anyone have a better solution?

Hope this helps with someone else embarking on their own Pax wardrobe build. Apologies didn’t get photos of all the steps.

r/ikeahacks on Reddit: SEKTION walk-in closet remodel
June 4, 2025 -

PAX feels really flimsy, so I decided to do a full closet remodel with SEKTION kitchen cabinet fames and MAXIMERA inner drawers. Came out better than I expected and would do it the same way again!

$2300 in IKEA items. $300 in trim and parts from HD and Amazon.

  • The IKEA online SEKTION designer worked great for the whole project design; parts list was 95% accurate -- it doubled up on some of the shelves because it is not smart enough to know that a 2 pack of shelves could be split between equivalent width frames.

  • Room dimensions were 98" x 84". Lucked out that I was able to completely fill the walls with combinations of the 18", 24", and 30" width frames with 0" to spare. After assembly, frames were accurate in width to ~0.5". I had to wedge the left two 30" frames in and was left with ~0.5" extra on the right of the back three frames. Was able to use the dead corner to create a small linen closet in the room next door.

  • Decided to put up a support around the back walls at the level of the rail and forgo using the IKEA rails -- the cabinet frames have two sets of holes: one set if using rails, the other set for flush mount -- and then you can direct mount to get your frames 0.5" tighter to the wall.

  • Ceiling height was 84-85", so had to assemble the 80" cabinets standing up - attached the CAPITA leg bracket first. Was then able to extend the legs so that the cabinets were pressed up against the ceiling.

  • Covered small gaps between frames, walls, and ceiling with PVC trim from HD and then caulk to finish. Used 0.5" along the ceiling and 1.25" between frames -- hard to tell it isn't custom built in.

  • The required SEKTION frame shelf support could be moved lower to accommodate a full-length wardrobe section if needed.

  • The IKEA counter options are not great for the small side cabinets, so bought pre-cut wood sections from HD and painted them white.

  • The closet bar supports (picture from Amazon) are really sturdy and the metal pins align perfectly with SEKTION and are the perfect diameter for the heavy-duty closet rods available at HD.

  • My fingers still hurt after inserting ~2500 VARIERA plugs into holes.

  • The mirror is too small, but it was $10 in IKEA clearance :)
