r/askphilosophy on Reddit: Definition of importance
June 13, 2014 -

Hi!

I once heard about a definition of importance, which goes as follows:

A person is important, if a lot of important persons think she is important. An object is important, if a lot of important persons think it is important.

So it works in a google-page-rank type of fashion.

Does anyone know what the name of this concept is or who came up with it?

In philosophy, as in every other academic field, there are two ways we define things. The first way is by checking the dictionary. This is how we come up with definitions for the vast majority of terms in philosophy and other academic fields - if you read a philosophy paper or a science paper, most of the words are going to just mean whatever it is the dictionary says they mean. The second way we define things is via stipulation: we say "by 'action' I mean something an agent does that is intentional under some description" or "by 'carrot' we mean anything in the genus and species Daucus carota" or whatever. We can stipulate whatever definition we want, although in practice you wouldn't stipulate something like "by 'horse' I mean Darth Vader" because this wouldn't be helpful. So, the project you've got in the OP, which is coming up with a definition of importance, isn't really a philosophical question. Either you're doing the first thing, in which case you're asking the dictionary question and you're right or wrong according to dictionary standards rather than philosophical standards, or you're doing the second thing and you can't be right or wrong, you're just stipulating a definition. I've never heard of a philosopher do either things for importance - the first is just trivial and the second doesn't strike me as very interesting. If someone has provided the definition of importance you've given here, it may be that they were engaged in the first task, or perhaps they were engaged in the second. In the first case they weren't doing philosophy and in the second case I doubt they were doing philosophy.

Unfortunately that argument falls apart pretty quickly. I'm important because these important people think I'm important. Ok, why are they important? Because these other important people think they are. Ok, and what about those important people, why are they important? And it goes on and on, until you run out of "important" people on the planet. That system of thinking requires that somewhere, there's someone (or someones) who simple ARE important... as a fact, without anyone else thinking they are. Can you find such a person without providing a new definition for importance?
