r/buildapc on Reddit: Inconsistent fan speed
March 11, 2021 -

So I recently bought some Noctua fans. (1 x 120 mm and 2 x 140 mm) for replacement of the stock front and exhaust fans I had.
They work great when it comes to moving air, and they really are nice and silent. BUT the fan speed seems to be very inconsistent at a higher RPM, I suspect it's my incompetence in setting a proper fan curve for them.

I have an Asus Prime B250M Plus Motherboard which does support PWM, and it is turned on in the BIOS. I firstly tuned all the fans using QFan or whatever it's called in the BIOS, but the fan curves it spitted out were utter garbage. I downloaded AI Suite 3 and tuned them again, which yielded a much better result. I like having the fans spin a little faster when gaming and I often monitor my CPU temps using HWMonitor. So I used the AI suites turbo setting and did some minor adjustments to the CPU Fans (Intel Stock cooler) but whenever in this setting, the Noctuas fluctuate in RPM with about 50 - 70 RPM, which is also noticeable.
Fan curve and fan graph
I know the principles of PWM signals, but I don't think it should be this aggressive?
To my untrained eye, these fan curves look fine, but are they too aggressive here?

how to control windows 10 fans/force them to slow down /force them to be turned off when the computer is cool?
Hi, I own a MSI laptop running on windows 10. It works fine but for a few days, I noticed the fans going crazy right away when I turn it on, (10 seconds-ish after connecting to my session). I checked the GPU temperature but it's stable at 30-40°C which… More on learn.microsoft.com

Inconsistent fan speed at idle | [H]ard|Forum
April 13, 2019 - I set the "curve" to be flat vs temp with the fan speed just high enough to do the job. So say 40% @ 20 deg, 40% @ 30 deg, 40% @ 50 deg, 40% @ 70 deg, then let it go on up to 100% at 85 deg.

Thank you for your quick reply, glad to hear your problem has been solved.

Sorry I may have misunderstood your question before. According to the problem you are facing, there are indeed some unknown problems with Windows Game Mode. I understand your idea of turning off Game Mode, but unfortunately, Game Mode cannot be turned off manually.

I have submitted this issue for you through internal channels. In addition, you can also submit your issue through the Feedback Hub (if convenient, please provide as much detail as possible, including pictures, videos, etc.), which will help Microsoft developers to further investigate this issue. Detailed steps can be found in the following link

Send feedback to Microsoft with the Feedback Hub app - Microsoft Support

Regarding the method you mentioned to adjust the fan speed, generally speaking, the fan speed is controlled by the motherboard, which is not adjusted through the Windows system, and the control software provided by the motherboard manufacturer is the most convenient way to adjust the relevant settings. I noticed that you tried to adjust the relevant settings in the BIOS, but the problem still exists, so it is possible that you did not set it correctly.

You can set different fan speeds according to different CPU temperatures and frequencies by manually adjusting the fan curve. For more information about this content, you can refer to the following article.

Hi,

thank you for this fast answer. Although I'm surprise to read that the game mode isn't a windows setting. I didn't use any third party software that would modify the OS this way. Everything related to MSI have been there from scratch since I didn't install anything related to MSI (I don't know exactly how MSI interacts with windows on laptop they sell but I do find the "game mode" in windows settings. A quick google research also suggests that microsoft released it.)

It looks like this (also as you can see I disabled it.)

* In the meantime I also tried to directly go into the hidden BIOS, but setting the fan speed to low values/ put super high treshold temperature didn't change anything. Resetting parameters to original values did also not change anything.

Is there anything I can do to interact with the system to fix this?

Here are:

* a screenshot of my settings, clicking on "jeux" (="games") leads to a different settings family (game bar, game DVR and game mode.

* a link to the first "game mode" search I made, there is tons of other results that all suggest that game mode is released by windows in some (recent?) update

* the said game mode available settings.

Update: using the MSI center (that I didn't really want to download for personal data reasons), I did manage to solve, in some way this issue. But I still wonder why my fans went crazy, and I also would like to make sure that the game mode isn't supposed to be part of the windows ecosystem. Or to know how to solve it without the MSI center that I'd like to remove at some point.

Problem With Randomly Fluctuating Fan Speed - HP Support Community - 7595310
May 15, 2020 - The fan speed however will go from 0 to 3000 to 6000 RPM back and forth every couple seconds. Sometimes it will stay on 6000 RPM for like 30 minutes even when the temperature is low 60s. Likewise, sometimes it shuts off for a while even when the temp is higher. there doesnt seem to be any pattern. I'm assuming it's a software problem? I've run virus scans and I've checked Task Manager but cpu is running at a fairly constant 10%. I tried going into the UEFI but there are no options for controlling fan speed.

How to control Fan Speed on Windows computers
There are several free fan speed controller software like SpeedFan and HWinFo, so if you don’t find its interface or control effective enough, you have got other options. If you’re looking to go overboard, you can always purchase an external fan hub (for your desktop) or a cooling pad for your laptop. Note: The CPU Fan error is usually triggered when you’ve turned on your PC. As such, the fan error occurs before Windows 10 OS boots and is probably caused due to some hardware issue, and It may not be due to overheating.

[SOLVED] - CPU fan is running rather erratically | Tom's Hardware Forum
March 19, 2020 - The third function (and vital, too) is to monitor the speed signal coming back from the fan for FAILURE, which is based on the fan speed. If the speed is less than some pre-set minimum, the mobo calls that a failed fan and takes action. On some mobos, the low limit that triggers failure detection is pre-set and fixed; on others you can change that limit.

r/buildapc on Reddit: cpu stock fan fluctuating and constantly changing speeds on new PC
December 27, 2019 -

I have the amd stock cooler on my ryzen 5 3600. I can hear a fan running quickly a bit then slowing down for a couple of seconds, its not really that loud but definitely noticeable and a bit annoying. Checked using HWMonitor and the cpu temp (40-50C) + stock cooler speeds are always fluctuating while everything else is more stable. Is this normal? and is there a way to make it more constant? this happens while pc is idle not even while gaming. Also should I download the latest bios for my mobo? (b450 Tomahawk max). Currently using the balanced power plan instead of the ryzen balanced one which did not make a difference

August 18, 2025 - On the left-hand side, choose the option, “Configure,” then translate fan speeds to temperature settings- i.e., 60 % at 50 C for making a fan curve. Set the settings, leave to cool off the temperatures after 10-15 minutes, and store the settings. Tip: For safe operation, try to keep the CPU below 85°C and the GPU below 80°C when under stress. If you do not want to use a separate software, then the BIOS/UEFI of your motherboard is an alternative possibility. After restarting your PC, hit the setup key (commonly F2, Del or F10) when booting.
