r/DinosaursMTG on Reddit: My Indominus Rex deck, complete with 51 alters
February 23, 2025 -

I am a huge I. Rex fan girl, I love the giant misunderstood psychopath so much I genuinely collect Indominus merch any chance I get (and if it's affordable. Oh boy there are some products out there that make me wish I was rich).

So obviously when she got her own MTG card, I instantly brewed a deck with her. Over the last couple months I've been fine tuning it and now that I'm finally happy with it, here it is!

THE DECK

As far as the deck's playability is concerned, she has roughly an 80% win rate, and usually she comes down with 5+ keywords at a time when I cast her. I'd say the most hilarious victory was a 2 hour game where she was a whopping thirteen mana when I cast her for the last time.

However I am a huge I Rex fan girl, remember? I can't stop at just the deck, it needs to be perfect. So I booted up my custom card maker and decided that every nonland, noncreature card had to be an homage in some way. I even made alters of some of the utility lands. 51 cards in total, and in the next couple weeks I'm going to be getting them all proxied up and put into the deck.

All of the art is screenshots from the movie or official concept art, with a few fan arts for cards that I couldn't really get a good official reference image for.

THE ALTERS

Obviously with this many alters, the noncreature portion of the deck is pretty set in stone unless something truly incredible comes out. If/when that happens I'll probably just keep the art/name/flavor text of whatever card it's replacing and just change the name and rules text.

If you have any questions about the deck, feel free to ask!

EDIT: After a deck update, it now has slightly less than 51 alters.

I need some help to my [[Indominus]] deck. The problems I have: I have not enough board, often I have an unkillable and monstrous Indominus by turn 4 or 5 and other 1 or 2 other creatures in play turn 6 or 7. Often people trying to join forces to kill me so I can't do much. With commander damage I need at least 3 attack if I manage to get some +1+/+1 counter on it but generally is a 6/6. So I need to survive, I was thinking a [[No mercy]] and [[Damnation]]. And I need some other cards that put +1+/+1 counters. An other things is that I draw A LOT, after casting Indominus I draw from 3 to 8 cards is a row, but all I draw are monsters or reanimating engine (that is good) but are there some other ways to use all that card vantage in a more useful way?

There is various way to build [[Indominus Rex, Alpha]] one way is to go more Voltron where you want more Haste in the Keywords and some +1/+1 stuff and the Voltron cards, its probably the fastest way to kill at least one player. The reanimation way is not exactly classic reanimation because you have Keywords creatures instead of game finisher and Indominus only fill the graveyard once. The other way i have chosen to build it is going more for a board control strategy abusing more the Indestrutible and Hexproof Keywords. I can put in more stuff like [[Pernicious Deed]] and [[Oblivion Stone]] getting Artifact and Enchantment to since we dont have many, i go lower in the +1/+1 stuff to do it and the board wipes also surve to clear the way for bigger attacks. The reanimation is more opportunistic and repeatable trying to get back the stuff i have discarted for a wider board. The chosen creatures are more of quality like Gods then just Keywords for Keywords. Here is my decklist with and old primer that i have made some change to since then: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/-vi7djdxvESVxyhObBLGuQ

Firstly, if you’re insisting on playing Indominus, you might want to think of some additional methods of dealing damage to players, cos Voltron strategies are very hard these days. Grab some quality direct damage cards like [[Ram Through]] for that direct damage. Next, you might want to think about the Scavenge mechanic for your deck. The 2nd Golgari keyword, they allow you to exile them from grave to add their power in counters to a creature of your choice. The scavenge cost isn’t great but if you’re discarding cards anyway, it might be worth it. The Scavenge cards with keywords are: *[[Zanikev Locust]] *[[Thrashing Mossdog]] *[[Sluiceway Scorpion]] *[[Bannerhide Krushok]] *[[Dreg Mangler]] *[[Korozda Monitor]] If you don’t like any of these, [[Varolz, the Scar-Striped]] will just give all creatures in your grave Scavenge by default. You should also add cards that have other effects whilst in graveyard, since you’ll discard them anyway. [[Vengeful Pharaoh]] and the Incarnations ([[Brawn]], [[Wonder]], & [[Filth]]) are my go-tos. Finally, if the Indominus is just too much with the constant discards and rebuilding, try [[Rayami]]. Same basic concept but with graveyard hate built in, plus you get to keep the keywords once exiled.

Indominus Rex - Voltron Control - Commander (Indominus Rex, Alpha)
Pretty simple plan; make sure you can cast Indominus with a hexproof and indestructible creature in hand at the very least (and ideally several more keywords), and then start wailing on opponents.
