MTG Commander Deck Of The Week: Indominus Rex, Alpha - Star City Games
January 5, 2024 - Instead, it wants to “eat” them – you want to discard some number of them to I-Rex’s enters-the-battlefield trigger to add a bunch of counters to it, and draw cards for each counter I-Rex enters the battlefield with. The keywords our Dinosaur friend looks for specifically are: ... Unfortunately, the Sultai color combination does not currently have access to a creature with the double strike keyword, but we can always hold out hope for one showing up in the future, likely on some small artifact creature. When I opened up a copy of Indominus Rex, Alpha from a Set Booster of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, I knew I had to build a Commander deck around it, and over the holiday I finally pulled the deck together and wanted to share it with you today.

r/DinosaursMTG on Reddit: My Indominus Rex deck, complete with 51 alters
February 23, 2025 -

I am a huge I. Rex fan girl, I love the giant misunderstood psychopath so much I genuinely collect Indominus merch any chance I get (and if it's affordable. Oh boy there are some products out there that make me wish I was rich).

So obviously when she got her own MTG card, I instantly brewed a deck with her. Over the last couple months I've been fine tuning it and now that I'm finally happy with it, here it is!

THE DECK

As far as the deck's playability is concerned, she has roughly an 80% win rate, and usually she comes down with 5+ keywords at a time when I cast her. I'd say the most hilarious victory was a 2 hour game where she was a whopping thirteen mana when I cast her for the last time.

However I am a huge I Rex fan girl, remember? I can't stop at just the deck, it needs to be perfect. So I booted up my custom card maker and decided that every nonland, noncreature card had to be an homage in some way. I even made alters of some of the utility lands. 51 cards in total, and in the next couple weeks I'm going to be getting them all proxied up and put into the deck.

All of the art is screenshots from the movie or official concept art, with a few fan arts for cards that I couldn't really get a good official reference image for.

THE ALTERS

Obviously with this many alters, the noncreature portion of the deck is pretty set in stone unless something truly incredible comes out. If/when that happens I'll probably just keep the art/name/flavor text of whatever card it's replacing and just change the name and rules text.

If you have any questions about the deck, feel free to ask!

EDIT: After a deck update, it now has slightly less than 51 alters.

I need some help to my [[Indominus]] deck. The problems I have: I have not enough board, often I have an unkillable and monstrous Indominus by turn 4 or 5 and other 1 or 2 other creatures in play turn 6 or 7. Often people trying to join forces to kill me so I can't do much. With commander damage I need at least 3 attack if I manage to get some +1+/+1 counter on it but generally is a 6/6. So I need to survive, I was thinking a [[No mercy]] and [[Damnation]]. And I need some other cards that put +1+/+1 counters. An other things is that I draw A LOT, after casting Indominus I draw from 3 to 8 cards is a row, but all I draw are monsters or reanimating engine (that is good) but are there some other ways to use all that card vantage in a more useful way?

Here is the deck: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/0cqnbc7JC0S_CmRSU2hQog

There is various way to build [[Indominus Rex, Alpha]] one way is to go more Voltron where you want more Haste in the Keywords and some +1/+1 stuff and the Voltron cards, its probably the fastest way to kill at least one player. The reanimation way is not exactly classic reanimation because you have Keywords creatures instead of game finisher and Indominus only fill the graveyard once. The other way i have chosen to build it is going more for a board control strategy abusing more the Indestrutible and Hexproof Keywords. I can put in more stuff like [[Pernicious Deed]] and [[Oblivion Stone]] getting Artifact and Enchantment to since we dont have many, i go lower in the +1/+1 stuff to do it and the board wipes also surve to clear the way for bigger attacks. The reanimation is more opportunistic and repeatable trying to get back the stuff i have discarted for a wider board. The chosen creatures are more of quality like Gods then just Keywords for Keywords. Here is my decklist with and old primer that i have made some change to since then: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/-vi7djdxvESVxyhObBLGuQ

Firstly, if you’re insisting on playing Indominus, you might want to think of some additional methods of dealing damage to players, cos Voltron strategies are very hard these days. Grab some quality direct damage cards like [[Ram Through]] for that direct damage. Next, you might want to think about the Scavenge mechanic for your deck. The 2nd Golgari keyword, they allow you to exile them from grave to add their power in counters to a creature of your choice. The scavenge cost isn’t great but if you’re discarding cards anyway, it might be worth it. The Scavenge cards with keywords are: *[[Zanikev Locust]] *[[Thrashing Mossdog]] *[[Sluiceway Scorpion]] *[[Bannerhide Krushok]] *[[Dreg Mangler]] *[[Korozda Monitor]] If you don’t like any of these, [[Varolz, the Scar-Striped]] will just give all creatures in your grave Scavenge by default. You should also add cards that have other effects whilst in graveyard, since you’ll discard them anyway. [[Vengeful Pharaoh]] and the Incarnations ([[Brawn]], [[Wonder]], & [[Filth]]) are my go-tos. Finally, if the Indominus is just too much with the constant discards and rebuilding, try [[Rayami]]. Same basic concept but with graveyard hate built in, plus you get to keep the keywords once exiled.

Indominus Rex - MTGNexus
Saiba Cryptomancer has the important hexproof and can give +1/+1. Drana, Liberator of Malakir has a couple of abilities and ongoing +1/+1 to all your creatures. Sluiceway Scorpion has deathtouch and you can discard to scavenge from your graveyard. Railway Brawler can be plot the turn before Indominus (natural curve as well with Rex at 5 mana) and would make him a 12/12.

r/magicTCG on Reddit: What to cut on my [Indominus Rex, Alpha] Commander Deck?
December 29, 2023 -

Hello fellow wizards,

I have currently build a deck based on the video of our beloved professor. You can see the video here: https://youtu.be/sOxQQnnp4oQ

I have basically just bought the upgraded version of the above mentioned deck and got some cards in addition to it as they where recommended in the comment section, e.g. [The Skullspore Nexus], [Blackblade, reforged], [Bribe Taker] or [Scavenged Brawler].

The deck itself has the goal to feed my commander with creatures which preferably have as many attributes as possible. My commander will therefore inherit these attributes (hexproof, indestructible, flying, etc) and let me draw a card for each creature discarded that way. In addition, the deck has a reanimation subtheme.

TLDR: I now have a deck with 106 cards total and cannot decide which cards to cut. I am sure that I want to keep all creatures with hexproof and indestructible attributes and creatures with strong abilities such as [Dire Fleet Ravenger], [Rankel, Master of Pranks], [Glissa Sunslayer] or [Gemrazer].

Which cards would you cut? You can find me current deck list here: https://manabox.app/decks/7P9H5J0XSTaZYyGc6a5u3Q

Thank you so much for your time and recommendations! I cannot wait to feed my dear mutant dinosaur and let it fly above my enemies armed with swords and with the possibility in mind to reanimate it anytime. Zombie mutant swordmaster dinosaur for the win! 🦖

So the 6 cards i would take out are [[Ransack the Lab]], [[Strategic Planning]], [[Moment of Truth]], [[Command the Dreadhorde]], [[Invasion of Ixalan]] and [[Arboreal Grazer]] I would also to compensate those cards include instead of basic lands of appropriate color [[Port of Karfell]], [[Tomb Fortress]] and if you have the budget [[Takenuma, Abandoned Mire]]. They would keep reanimation without taking non-land slot. The deck is missing in ramp cards so I would also swap [[Sylvan Caryatid]] instead of [[Tamiyo’s Safekeeping]] also [[Honest Rutstein]] instead of [[Rescue from the Underworld]] and [[Topiary Stomper]] instead of [[Jaspera Sentinel]]. The 2 other 3 mana ramp could also be upgraded. To keep the good keyword high and drawing I would also swap [[Toski, Bearer of Secrets]] instead of [[Hunter’s Insight]] and [[Spling of Colfenor]] instead of [[Blackblade Reforged]]. It would not be bad to include some cards that can copy legendary creatures to back your commander and continue drawing and making use of those keyword creatures. The style of your deck is more ‘’Voltron’’ so I did not take out any cards that double power. I will include a link to my list that is more ‘’Mid-Range/Board Control’’ for inspiration and if in the longer run you want to go for something other than ‘’Voltron’’ it is an option by changing those cards. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/-vi7djdxvESVxyhObBLGuQ

r/EDH on Reddit: Indominus Rex Deck Help
January 26, 2024 -

Hi everyone!

I am currently trying to build an [[Indominus Rex, Alpha]] deck, and wow this feels hard aha.

I am fairly new to MTG and I started with EDH. I built my first deck recently with the help of EDHREC and Moxfield (Hydrax and everyone writing primers, thank you guys !). But this was a "simple" one ([[Ezuri, claw of progress]]).

For this dino I'd love to play, I looked on the internet and tried to do my own thing, here is the current state https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ZNtb7yHup0KtLvRDW-SQnA (do not hesitate to look at tags !)

So I am trying to build it as a keyword/reanimator deck. I read things on the internet about the use of clones, counter interactions when it enters the battle field ([[Essence flux]] and [[Ripple of potential]]), the Voltron part, I am still not quite sure about how I managed to do a little bit of the two lasts (I don't know about the clones part, what do you think of it ?)

I did not fulfilled the deck, some slots are empty. Why I am struggling, and what am I struggling on ?

  • Draw. Usually I tend to include a lot of draw cards. Here, the indominus is supposed to make me draw but I don't know... I should not purely rely on it, what do you think of the draw tag cards ? I play a 3 green decks and I usually include [[Guardian project]] but here, I am not sure about it.

  • Ramp is ok-isch ? I tried to include some ramp I could discard if I'd like to, so I did not include the classic elves I usually do. But I have the same problem with ramp that I have with draw: I don't know if I can count on card that ramps that I'd like to discard.

  • Interactions and removal. Have I enough to protect my commander, as I believe it is clearly my main and (only ?) wincon ? Should I include some artifacts like [[Lightning greaves]] or [[Whispersilk Cloak]] ?

  • General strategy and wincons. Should I play some clones ? I am not sure about how it works, whether they enter the battlefield with counters if they copy a creature that has counters on it, whether they trigger ETB capacities of the copied creature. Should I include more counter interaction to draw a lot of cards when it enters the battlefield ? Should I deep into a Voltron strategy ?

Nota: I included a lot of cards from Revenant Recon new deck as I plan to buy it, I'd love to play some reanimators deck ! (https://www.moxfield.com/decks/vZL4Rzjteka1s6-UU3okAg)

And I would like to make a semi budget deck, meaning I am ok to buy cards around 10-20$ if they are key cards, but I won't put 10$ on mana ramps or 30$ in any card like [[The Ozolith]]

Hope you are all fine !

EDIT: I finally converged to this full version. I'll have to think about it more but for now I'll sleep on it. I added only 3 clones that I plan to use both as wincons and draw engine. I also restricted interactions only to prevent board wipe that exile creatures (With hexproof and indestructible I should be protected from anything else). I am not sure about how this should work, we'll have a look ! I may lack of hexproof and trample keyword cards, but I do not know what to swap now.

Draw: I think the ideal line of play for Indominus Rex is to draw as many cards as possibke before casting your commander. You want to hold creatures in your hand so you can discard them. I would run a bunch of efficient draw spells in the low end of your curve. Ramp: This deck probably doesn't want mana dorks without key words. Some land ramp wil always be good. I would include 3-5 land ramp spells, 3-4 more lands and lean on your draw spells to stay on curve. Interaction: You have hexproof creatures that will translate to hexproof on your commander. You don't really need boots. I would try effects like [[Kaya's Ghostform]] or [[Teferi's Time Twist]]. These cards let you dodge board wipes and abuse your commander's ETB triggers at the same time. Cut Essence Flux because it isn't board wipe protection. Your targeted removal is probably fine. I would look for a more 1-sided boardwipe than Toxic Deluge. If your commander is your main wincon, then maybe try [[Tyvar's Stand]]. It double as protection and a pump spell to strike for lethal.

I used a preexisting list I found on YouTube by DecktechforDecks and subbed in some of my own cards. But my deck mostly focuses on ramping because it runs a lot of keyword creatures. I really care more about casting my commander because, even with 2 creatures to discard, I'm usually drawing about 4+ cards on cast. Ideally, you want to focus indestructible, but heatproof is excellent too. Both are ideal. Include creature tutors and I subbed out [[Pyr] and [[Toothy]] for double strike equipment Decklist Edit: forgot to say the list itself isn't budget, but I was able to sub out a lot what I didn't want to spend.
