We use walnut, white oak, and ash to make our solid wood storage boxes, and we use reclaimed oak to make our reclaimed wood storage benches. There are plenty of factors to consider, though we'd say the key ones are: (1) that the right materials have been used, like solid or reclaimed wood that's known to be far more durable and rich in character than MDF; (2) that it's made right and to a level of quality you are happy with; (3) that it fits your space perfectly, or can be customized to do so, and (4) that it's easy to care for.
