Hydroponic garden vs traditional dirt garden w/ a grow light INDOORS.
Plants grow faster hydroponically compared to soil, so if time to harvest matter go hydro. As for the tabletop hydro systems, there are plenty of systems under $100....the more you pay the more bells and whistles you typically get....generally you get the convenience of an all-in-one device with lights and reminders for nutrients, and a water level indicator...so if ease of use/maintenance matters it's hard to beat. Just be aware that you will generally want to use 1/4 to 1/2 of the spots, so a 12 spot system will really only be good for 3-6 plants (depends on the specific plants). DIY hydro will be much cheaper, although not as easy or pretty to look at. I'm not a fan of soil indoors, mainly because of the increased chance of pests. If you have pots and soil already it'll probably be pretty affordable. Basically, you just need to decide what it is you want most and let that decide for you. You want easy...pre-made system. You want cheap... DIY or soil. You want faster harvest... hydro. More on reddit.com
High tech, indoor farms use a hydroponic system, requiring 95% less water than traditional agriculture to grow produce. Additionally, vertical farming requires less space, so it is 100 times more productive than a traditional farm on the same amount of land. There is also no need for pesticides.
I see no mention of electrical usage. High intensity LEDs use about 40% of the energy that equivalent traditional lights, but we are still talking 400 kw per hour for each light. If it’s all run off solar or wind, great. Edit: eliminating trucking food into urban areas would totally off set the electrical usage. Edit2: yes, I mis-typed. A 400w light uses .4kw/hour. That’s still a ton of energy when running 24 hours a day. Or even 18:6. More on reddit.com

Totally feel you — dealing with Florida heat and trying to grow veggies indoors sounds like a full-time job 😅 I came across an article earlier where a gardening expert tested out a few popular hydroponic systems (all no-DIY). Thought it might help you narrow things down: “ A gardening expert tested several indoor hydroponic systems ” — link's in there if you're curious. Some good plug-and-play picks for solo growers! What vegetables grow best indoors?
Leafy greens such as lettuce, spinach, kale and arugula thrive best in indoor settings because they mature quickly and don't need pollination. Herbs like basil, mint, cilantro and chives also do well indoors with minimal space requirements. Small-fruiting vegetables like cherry tomatoes and peppers can also thrive with proper lighting and care. Root vegetables, including carrots, do better in deeper containers, while microgreens are nearly foolproof and can be harvested in as little as a week.

What is the best plant to grow indoors?
Herbs are the most rewarding plants for indoor growing, with basil being the top recommendation for beginners. Basil thrives in bright conditions, grows quickly with minimal care and is incredibly useful. Other great options include mint (a vigorous grower), rosemary (fragrant and versatile) and microgreens (nutrient-rich with minimal effort). For ornamental value and air-purifying benefits, snake plants and pothos are quite easy and forgiving for beginners.

The Best Hydroponic System for Vegetables and Herbs - Food Gardening Network
October 17, 2024 - While it’s not important to everyone, it was important to me that the hydroponic system I bought into was a “smart” one, because I was (and still am) new to hydroponic indoor gardening. In terms of a smart hydroponic system, I was looking for automatic watering (or a reservoir), automatic lights, and the ability to plant my own seed eventually, and not rely on buying from the system indefinitely.

Tl;dr: title.
If anyone has had experience buying those hydroponic garden kits vs. just adding a UV light to a potted indoor garden, which would you recommend for someone trying to have a mini herb garden for the kitchen? Is it worth spending the $100+ for a hydroponic garden or can I get similar results by just adding a grow light to some dirt pots? Better consistency? Same grow speed? Convenience factor of having an automated system that tells you when its time to water the plants? Let me know! Thanks.

The "best" solution is the one that best optimizes your desire for simplicity, sensitivity to cost, and why you want to grow herbs at all. If your goal is purely to save money on store-bought cilantro, buying a $100 pre-made system will take a while before it pays off. But if you just enjoy having plants around, are looking for a new hobby, or want maximum-freshness out of your herbs all year round, than sure, go for it. I would recommend hydroponic (either a self-contained system or DIY) for a kitchen, because like someone else said... pests. That said, a grow light over soil in a cup will 100% work if you're willing to take that risk. If you go the hydroponics route, ask yourself what's most important: A small Kratky set up will be way cheaper, but it'll require more time investment and brain power to learn, buy the materials, and set up. Not trying to dissuade you from it though! It's still super straightforward and experimenting with your own DIY rig is rewarding in it's own right. A all-in-one device will work just fine, and be marginally simpler than a Kratky container. It will also look sleeker and more at home in most kitchens. But it will cost 20-40x what you could be spending going DIY. Also: having an automated system that tells you when its time to water the plants? Fun fact: the plants themselves have an automated system for telling you when they need to be watered, but figuring that out is half the fun of learning Kratky!
