Commercial Coffee Grinders - Pro Coffee Gear
Commercial Coffee grinders use tw burrs (Steel with sharp teeth-like grooves) to break down whole bean coffee into tiny particles. One of these burrs is driven by a large synchronous AC AC motor, capable of rotating the burr at high speeds (revolutions per minute / RPM).

Large scale grinders
You probably want an industrial grinder like what these folks sell. Something specialized for large-batch grinding, and not just a commercial grinder aimed at much smaller batches but continuous use. You're mentioning 400lb orders and I think you'd be spending days at a time working a Bunn or two through an order that scale - at which point it's saving you money to drop cost on a commercial and push those orders down to a one-hour commitment. I used something a lot like this thing at my last roastery job whenever we had huge ground-coffee orders, it's hopper held ~150lbs or so and it could clear the hopper in fifteen minutes - it took me longer to set up batches for grinding than it took to grind the coffee. I see buckeye also has a couple of industrial models available. More on reddit.com

Hi guys, I am an industrial designer and, I just graduated. I and my mates develop a new kind of coffee grinder, and we launch it on Kickstarter at the end of the month. I want to share the project with you and I wonder about your ideas about the grinder.
Sorry, in having a hard time getting past the name! Other than that, the sketches and renderings on your site are great. I don't know enough about the existing product to really gauge your innovations but it's a polished design none the less. More on reddit.com

How loud is it?

Hey everyone,
Was looking into a grinder that can make my operation more efficient. Does anyone know of any coffee grinders that can handle large amounts of beans? I’ve got a couple bunn grinders with 3lb hoppers but I’ve been tasked with 400 lb orders and it’s been taking a long time with my current set up. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

Mahlkonig VTA - you can pick up cheaper older ones on eBay. They’ll do a KG in around 25s with new burrs. They’re easy to use, absolutely bombproof, and the burrs last for years. Also they’re bench mounted and don’t take up much room. You’ll kill an espresso grinder like the EK43 with big orders like that, they overheat too easily. It’s a bigger outlay initially but you won’t need another grinder for commercial use for a while after that: Note: they’re not as adjustable as the EK, but if you’re grinding for anything other than commercial espresso use they’re perfect. They will grind espresso fine, just won’t be as adjustable as people need them to be for good espresso accros different coffees

August 12, 2024 - The 54mm portafilter is the least issue amongst those you’ve listed; a really good grinder, even the Encore ESP, SK40 Turin, DF54 or DF64Gen2 and the Lagom Mini for sure will vastly improve the espresso a Bambino Plus will produce. I’d concentrate on a) a good grinder, b) using good filtered water, c) sourcing good coffee, then work on your skills.

August 17, 2020 - I use a Bunn and a Grindmaster for my small operation. They grind a lot of coffee and the consistency is pretty solid. Would definitely get as big of hopper as you can though. Price can fall around double that price point, but you can find good deals online occasionally. But grinders are worth the investment.
