Is there an easy/lazy-yet-responsible way to go No Lawn?
Mostly shady backyard area. Need ideas! Looking for budget friendly and low maintenance solutions.

Easy Mode: Seems like the opt-out way, "just letting it all grow" can be reckless/irresponsible. Invasives can grow unchecked, etc. Better than monoculture bad-lawn, but can very easily up being a lesson in nature, and/or the Law of Unintended Consequences.
Hard Mode: Start from Zero, take years to: kill all turf with cardboard. plan, budget, plan, work, plan, plan. plan a native paradise. Spreadsheets. buy $ hundreds/thousands worth of seed/plants. water, maintain, keep pests from ruining it, etc etc.
... what is the middle path?
I would like to find a good-enough compromise. I want to overseed my turf lawn once or twice per year, and gradually end up with a green, pesticide/herbicide free, animal and bug friendly yard full of happiness. I'm happy to learn plant identification either way, but I wish to add more benefit to my yard, without making a big project with overmany learning-curves.
Is that do-able, or do i need to choose an extreme?
(USA, zone 4b, 0.25acre, urban, if that influences the answer somehow)
