March 15, 2025 -

I am so confused by infant car seats! I get the very basics that all seats are made based on weight limits, but it seems like all car seats are pretty equally “safe”? I have no idea what factors to consider now! So that leads me to some questions:

Does the anti-rebound bar make much of a difference?

Thoughts on a convertible car seat that grows with baby? (My hesitation here is our plan to have more than one and wanting to reuse items - plus I know car seats expire)

Do you prefer a seat that fits into a stroller? (Is it true that this position is not ideal for baby? Should I just forget that “necessity”?)

Did you go for a lightweight infant seat? If so, what did you pick? This is what I am currently leaning towards.

Thanks!

All car seats do meet the same minimum safety requirements, but they do get different crash ratings when tested by independent labs. You will need a convertible seat eventually. After your baby outgrows the infant seat, they should still be rear-facing for a while longer. A convertible seat is the next step and will allow forward or rear facing. Many convertible seats have a 10 year expiration but they can also be used for 10 years by one child so I don’t think that matters too much. If you want to reuse it for another kid you can if your first is old enough for a booster seat, but you’d have to have a very long age gap for that to be the case. Most likely you’ll need two convertible seats at the same time if you have a 2-4 year age gap. I’m kind of confused by what hesitation you say you’re having. This is a necessity whether you get it now (and skip the infant seat) or a year from now (when your baby outgrows the infant seat). Yes, it’s true that it’s not ideal to use a car seat outside of the car. Babies shouldn’t spend more than 2 hours at a time in the car seat, regardless of whether the seat is in the car or stroller. However, it is convenient for quick errands to not have to unstrap the baby and put them back in if you’re just running into the pharmacy for a few minutes. It comes down to how much you want the convenience vs the cost of buying that seat. And not all strollers can accommodate a newborn, so if you want to have a stroller option without needing the car seat, you need to make sure to pick a newborn-ready stroller. Personally, we did not get an infant seat at all, but if we did, I would have prioritized a lightweight one because the only value in it is being able to carry it around outside the car so I would want that to be as easy as possible.

Let me answer the first question: safety. Car seats operate under a pass-fail. They pass or they fail. There’s no grading system (Safe, safer, safest or A, B, C, D). Just like anyone with a license or degree - you just have to make a passing grade. Could some do better than others? Absolutely. But ultimately, they all have to pass the same test to be sold on the market. Unfortunately this information isn’t publicly released, so IMHO it’s an educated guess combined with parent preference as to which seat is going to ultimately be best for you. This applies to all car seats: there is a saying that “the safest car seat is the one installed correctly.” You can purchase a top of the line car seat, but if it is not installed properly, you may as well have purchased the cheapest/worst rated. Hopefully this is pretty self-explanatory, but ultimately if you purchase a car seat, that is absolutely insane to install, you run the chance that none of the safety mechanisms will be in place to protect your baby. From what I have heard from most CPSTs, the preference is for an easier to install seat than one with a lot of “features”. After having car seats that have been super easy to install (Britax click tight, Nuna Pipa, Nuna Exec, Babytrend), and another one that has not (Clek going) - the next car seat I purchase will absolutely be easier to install. Do anti rebound bars (ARB) (or plates or whatever the anti rebound system is) make a difference? Yes. Europe requires them on their seats. A simple YouTube video search will also help you see some visuals. My thoughts on convertible car seats: I think if it suits your lifestyle, then go with it. They do tend to fit small babies a little awkward based off of pictures and information I have seen. I personally went with convertible car seats that had the ability to do extended rear facing. (When you go to read this part, just remember you asked) This is a hill I will die on. Car seats are meant for quick trips, and not meant to be used as a stroller. I loved that I could take the infant car seat out of the car so that we could buckle baby up inside the house or the apartment. Living in South Texas, the inside of my car when we get in it might be 140°. The idea of putting my baby inside a hot car seat as an infant is rough, and I’m glad we were able to buckle them up inside. It also worked perfectly when we were going to and from the doctors office, or if I just had to run into the store to pick something up like a prescription. But I firmly believe that the car seat position on the stroller is relatively dangerous, does not let babies move around, which increases the risk of getting a pressure ulcer, and overheating. There are times why I think it should genuinely be pushed by the American Academy of pediatrics to not use car seats on the stroller because of how many times I see parents pushing their babies around in them for hours.
