Ranking Every Ingmar Bergman Film From Worst To Best — Films Fatale
April 19, 2024 - Whether we’re placed in a confessional booth in a cathedral, a psychiatric ward’s padded four walls, or a theatrical stage stripped of its frills and down to a minimalist state of limbo, Bergman has always fixated on the sensation of abandonment and desperation. His films exemplify purgatory, be it in the afterlife or here on a struggling planet amongst those in an uncaring civilization. I’ve been waiting to rank this director’s motion pictures for far too long, so much so that I’m releasing this ranking of every Ingmar Bergman film without any real reason to (no major dates are attached to this article) outside of the fact that I would proudly call Ingmar Bergman my favourite director of all time, and have done so for the better part of almost twenty years.

r/criterion on Reddit: What’s your top 10 Ingmar Bergman films in rank order?
April 22, 2023 -

Simply, I’m interested to see what people would choose and how they would order it. Extra points if you can tell me why number one is your favourite and why number 10 is number 10.

I’ve recently begun binging a lot of Bergman after getting the gorgeous Criterion Boxset- sadly I’ve been busy and have only seen 5 Bergman films myself sadly. That will soon change over the coming days however! For now, I ask for your completely selfish, honest and subjective top 10s to possibly help me decide what Bergman films I should watch sooner rather than later.

Thanks in advance :)

Ingmar Bergman Ranked, Worst to Best — Penn Moviegoer
November 16, 2023 - I would know - this past month I watched (subjected myself to? endured?) 15 of Bergman’s most well-known films, including his two behemoth five-hour miniseries. That may seem like a lot, but given that Bergman directed over 60 feature length films throughout his career, 15 is really quite a small portion of the whole.

May 21, 2023 - 1982 – Sweden – 189 min This is by far my favourite Ingmar Bergman film and apparently one of his most autobiographical. We witness the lives of the Ekdahl family, a sprawling bourgeois clan in turn-of-the-twentieth-century Sweden, through the eyes of the ten-year-old Alexander.

The ‘greatest film-maker who ever lived’
July 31, 2017 - Bergman is categorised as ‘austere’, despite his playfulness, exemplified by Smiles of a Summer Night (1955), and the sensuality of many of his key works, including Persona (1966) and Cries & Whispers (1972).
