You will probably need to install the driver from prolific to make it work properly. I'm not home right now but it is something like prolific 2032. More on reddit.com

I have three separate Cisco switches, 1 3750 and 2 2960s. I have 3 different console cables and 1 USB to Serial adapter from Insignia. I have tried every console cable with each switch and the symptoms are the same on all. As soon as it connects everything acts normal with normal out and input for about 5 seconds then nothing. It like freezes. I have tested this with Putty, Tera Term, and Minicom. At this point I'm pretty sure its the adapter but I want to see if anyone has experienced this issue before. Settings are default as follows btw:
9600 baud, 8 data bits 1 stop bit none parity none flow control

You will probably need to install the driver from prolific to make it work properly. I'm not home right now but it is something like prolific 2032.

I would recommend you create a live Linux distro on a thumb drive - Ubuntu for simplicity's sake, say - and boot into that. Once you're in there, run apt-get install screen from a terminal or command line, followed by sudo screen /dev/ttyUSB0 and see if you can access the switches that way. If you can, then it's a Windows driver issue, and you should get the driver from the chipset manufacturer (NOT the cable manufacturer; it's going to be either Prolific or FTDI). If it fails under Linux, bad cable.
