Hacked on Instagram — hackers keep regaining control even after password changes. Need urgent advice.
Well you didn't get hacked. They figured out your password because you probably use it elsewhere and it got leaked. So they logged in and changed the password and enabled 2FA. You also didn't protect yourself with 2FA to prevent this. Create a new account and this time use a strong unique password and set up 2FA using a 2FA authenticator. More on reddit.com

Hello all,

Yesterday (11/2) I started getting hacked on Instagram. I had my phone on me and immediately began receiving emails saying there was a new login, a new account added to my Accounts Center, a new email (at domain @oletters. com) and phone number added, and that 2-factor authentication was enabled.

I received multiple “Secure your account” emails, which I kept using, but the hackers were too fast. Every time I removed the newly added emails/phone numbers, I’d get kicked out again. I tried logging back in, changing my password, but somehow they would stay logged in (I don’t understand how).

I had enough friends report my account for fraud, so it’s currently locked. When I tried recovering my account, I’d enter the email affiliated with it, receive a code, enter it, and then get asked for the 2FA code sent to the new phone number (which I obviously don’t have). I selected “try another way” to do the selfie video verification, but I could never reach that step. Instagram asked me for an email they could use to contact me and said they’d send a code there, but I never received that second code (tried multiple emails).

Out of desperation, I contacted the people behind the Nigerian phone numbers now associated with my account. Allegedly, no codes were being sent to their number — but this morning they sent me my backup codes. I used one to log in and tried immediately removing all contact info that wasn’t mine, but again, the hackers were too fast. I started getting the same emails again: new phone number added, attempts to replace my email, etc. I stopped one of those through a “secure your account” email.

At this point, my friends have reported my account again and it’s locked, but I don’t know what else to do. I feel completely outmatched by whatever automation or system they’re using.

I’m looking for advice from anyone experienced with Instagram security or account recovery — specifically: • How can I lock out other devices permanently? • Is there any way to force Instagram to remove their added phone number and 2FA? • How can I get through to actual Instagram support or Meta help? • Has anyone successfully dealt with a hacker who keeps overriding security changes in real time?

Any guidance, contacts, or steps I should take next would be massively appreciated.

TL;DR: Got hacked on Instagram (11/2). Hackers added their phone + email, enabled 2FA, and keep regaining access within minutes no matter how many times I change my password or “secure” my account. I can’t get past the 2FA screen or reach the selfie verification step. I temporarily got back in using backup codes they sent me, but they keep hijacking it again. Account is now locked after multiple reports. Need help figuring out how to remove their access, lock out other devices, and actually get through to Instagram/Meta support.

Instagram accounts typically get hacked through a variety of methods, often involving some form of social engineering or exploiting weak security practices. Here are the most common ways people get hacked: Phishing Scams: This is one of the most common methods. Hackers create fake login pages or send emails pretending to be Instagram. Users enter their credentials, unknowingly giving hackers access to their accounts. Weak Passwords: If your password is simple or reused across different platforms, hackers can use "credential stuffing", where they try combinations of known emails/passwords from data breaches. Social Engineering: Some attacks involve impersonation or manipulation, where hackers trick users into revealing personal details or passwords. They might send messages pretending to be Instagram support or a friend in distress. Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Bypasses: If users don’t have 2FA enabled, it’s easier for hackers to gain access with just a password. In some rare cases, SIM-swapping attacks can bypass SMS-based 2FA. Malware: In some cases, users might unknowingly install malicious apps or software that captures login information, especially if they click on suspicious links. Always be cautious of suspicious messages, verify URLs before logging in, use strong passwords, and enable 2FA to help protect your account.

May 7, 2024 -

I wanted to share with you how to recover a hacked Instagram account, from someone with 7+ years of experience in social media marketing. No fluff.

Method 1)

https://instagram.com/hacked

The first thing I recommend you do is go to the website above.

Select “my account was hacked”

Then, put in your username / email / phone number. Also do anything else they request like a ‘selfie’ or photo of you with ID.

Often times, Meta will get back to you very soon and assist you with recovering your account. If you don’t hear a response though, I recommend refilling this out once a week. Wait times public support forms can often be slow as you are one person on a very long list. It can take up to 30 days.

Method 2)

Business/Meta Verified Support. Run ads or pay $15 for Meta Verified to get access to paid support. Open chat with representative. Ask them to assist you in recovering your profile which was hacked. Be very specific with your case and include any screenshots like the exact time the email was changed on the Instagram profile, if you still have access to your email. Your username, previous email/phone number on file, recent login locations, and include your ID or business documents if the page was not a personal. Reiterate that the Instagram.com/hacked form above did not work and see if they can escalate the hacked case to an internal team.

This method works best when you reach out from a profile that was added to the Accounts Center of the hacked account. If your profile which you’re reaching out from was never connected in the accounts center, many reps will not assist you in recovering your hacked account. I still recommend you try, however, because while rare, sometimes you can get a hold of a manager or somebody who is willing to help, but it is very rare that they assist you if you do not have a profile that was previously connected in the accounts center.

Step by step instructions on how to open a chat with a Meta verified support.

Make sure to use a profile that was connected in the accounts center.

On the contrary, if you’re a business, you can still use the method above to badge your personal and contact support given profiles are connected in Accounts Center. If you’ve ever paid for ads, you can also reach out to a rep via Facebook Business Support or Commerce Manager Support if you have a catalog / shop to see if they can assist you in recovering your page after hacked.

Follow up every 72 hrs Monday-Friday. Be polite and remember that you’re talking to real human being on the other side of the computer, who’s likely on an 8hr shift talking to people like yourself. If they offer a phone call, take the call. It has a higher success rate.

You can also request refund for the subscription via Apple or the Google play store to get your money back if the method doesn’t work for you.

TIP: To protect your profiles from a future hack make sure you add your Instagram profile and your Facebook profile to the same accounts center so they’re connected. This way, if anything happens, you can use meta-verified support to reach out to a representative and they can assist you because you’ve proven ownership of the profile.

Method 3)

Using NON-PUBLIC support channels. While this won’t be possible for every person, there are non-public premium support channels, which are given to certain partners.

  • FORMS - There are some forms that exist which are not publicly advertised to fix issues like hacked accounts or perform unbans or verifications. While I don’t know any forms except public ones, I put FORMs under non-public because I’ve heard of some forms that exist for specific niches or are forms to other departments with faster processing times in Meta. Forms can be public or non-public which is why I mentioned them here in non-public support.

  • PORTALS - The most notorious portal is the Media Partner Portal or the Media Partner Panel, but there are many portals like the Musician portals, Government/GPA, Entertainment portals, Facebook Marketing Partner portals, ect. Each portal has requirements, and you can’t submit any account just because you have a portal, which is why these support portals are not viable for most normal accounts and regular people.

  • EMPLOYEE CONTACT - Notable brands, agencies, influencers, or advertisers are sometimes assigned an employee for direct contact to assist with any issues they or the brands they represent may have. You should not message any employee of Meta in hopes of recovering your hacked profile. Employees will not help users recover a hacked profile, unless officially assigned to your brand, business, or profile. Furthermore, Meta is a huge company with numerous departments and 50,000+ employees, most of which cannot even contact the department inside Meta to assist with a hacked recovery, but it is a non-public support that does exist which was why I mentioned it.

If you have any questions, please let me know in the comments or inside r/bouc and I’ll help guide you on how to contact Meta’s official support to recover a hacked account on Instagram!

Hey, I work for an online reputation management agency that specializes in social media recoveries so I’d like to weigh in on this briefly. First off, very solid guide, huge props for writing it but I just wanna correct a few inconsistencies I’ve found. The biggest one is the meta verified support. Unfortunately, in our experience, we haven’t found it to be a very effective preventative measure against hacks or suspensions. Most meta verified accounts are treated in the same exact fashion as a regular account as it’s simply a paid subscription. The support is indeed more responsive but the reps who handle those queries have little to no internal power to actually fix just about anything. They have to redirect cases to central escalation support to get anything resolved but they can’t redirect every single case to them. That leaves most people dealing with a middleman who’s job is to basically discredit 80% of the claims so as to not overload the actual limited number of true decision-makers. As for method #3, portals and employee contacts are essentially the same thing. The sole value in having access to a portal is the fact that you are given a direct line to a representative whose entire job is to assist the owner with whatever issues they encounter. Yes, you are correct in saying that there are a lot of different portals out there but the one that is most commonly referred to in cases of account recovery are marketing partner portals. ORM agencies like the one I work for along with other service providers all use this portal to file their claims because it gives you the option of submitting just about any account under the pretense of it being a client under your management. Obviously, a musician portal (largely only given to record labels) or a government portal (given to government entities) are not going to be useful for cases of such nature since they can only submit claims pertaining to accounts belonging to their organizations. A marketing partner portal, however, can be used to file claims for any account without raising much suspicion as any account can technically be a client, whether it be a business or a personal account (even the so-called “regular people”). I’ll concede that the average regular person is obviously not really going to be utilizing these services as each claim costs well into the four figures to file but in comparison to the others, the option is at the very least available to them but simply priced out for most. As opposed to your average meta-verified rep, the marketing partner portal gives you direct access to an actual decision-maker rep that can resolve the claims you file without having to involve a superior. On top of that, you also have the added benefit of this caliber of rep being more “agreeable” to your claims considering the fact you only have access to them because you’re spending upwards of $50,000 a month on Meta advertising. Meta would never actually confirm this to be the case but it’s just something we’ve observed over the years when comparing the effectiveness of one portal against the other. The media/marketing partners generally just get far more favorable in comparison to the rest and it’s not too hard to imagine why considering the rest don’t pay for the privilege. Anyhow, this comment became much longer than I initially anticipated but I just wanted to clear up some of the misconceptions. Again, great guide and we thank you for your service, hope I was able to contribute some useful info here as well! - Brandon @ Maximatic Media

Thank you for the guide, My ig was hacked on Wednesday, they got into my Hotmail, somehow, then went into ig, change email, phone and put 2 factor authentication. Tried all the self help, FAQ from instagram, including, send code to old phone, email, request friend for help. Nothing worked, bcos instag block me from trying and 2fa authentication. So after trying all Wednesday and most of Thursday. I got my Facebook meta verified, pay 19.9. Had to change my profile pic and upload passport, process took about 20 mins. Then I went into chat support, got a live support person, explained to them the situation, and they went to investigate. They got back to me in 30 mins. FB was very efficient, whole process took less than an hr. Got my ig back.

Hey everyone! I hope some of you can help me solve my problem. Yesterday Instagram logged me out of my account and this page pops up, whenever I try to log in (I tried several times yesterday and today too). What can I do in this case? I tried to log in from different browsers, tried from my desktop and also from my TV, but nothing seems to work. I also had this problem a few months ago, that time the only solution was to log in from my mom’s phone and change my password through her device. But this time, her phone is being serviced, and I don’t have anyone at the moment whose phone I can use. What can I do to get my instagram back? Thanks in advance!🙏🏼
