Can you take a picture? I've never had one install from the outside, since generally the motherboard pushed up on it which may cause it to pop out from the outside. It would make a difference since the holes wouldn't line up with the ports on your motherboard. Answer from -UserRemoved- on reddit.com

r/buildapc on Reddit: I/O shield - Install from inside or outside of the case?
August 10, 2018 -

I am using ASRock AB350M and a Cooler Master Lite 3.1.

I have seen tutorials of this and they all put the I/O shield in from the inside of the case.

To save my life, I cannot begin to get it to fasten that way. But it clicks into place and fastens perfectly if I place it against the outside of the case.

Will this really make that much of a difference? I guess it will be slightly higher and so the plugs might not fully connect to the mobo.

Thanks.

What Is an IO Shield?
An IO shield is a shortened name for the “motherboard input output shield,” a metal plate included with almost every commercial motherboard on the market today. These plates were designed to be installed on the backplate of a computer case. There should already be a cutout hole on your case that is designed specifically for the IO shield. Every IO shield, regardless of the manufacturer, should fit into the ports on the back of the case. Of course, they are also designed to perfectly sit on top of the motherboard that it comes with.

Where can I get an IO shield?
Usually, every motherboard comes with its own IO shield. However, if you have lost yours, or if yours didn’t ship with one, then you can simply order it from eBay. It shouldn’t cost above $10.

What Is The Motherboard IO Shield & How To Install It?
Do I Really Need To Use an IO Shield?
If your motherboard comes with an IO shield (whether it is just a part in the box or it is already installed on the motherboard), then you should install it. It doesn’t take long, and it will help you out in the long run. It offers protection, looks better, and if not, it will just sit around and gather dust. If you don’t want to install it, for whatever reason, it’s fine too. It doesn’t offer that much protection that you absolutely have to use it. For most people, electromagnetic interference protection isn’t a huge concern because IO panels have gone digital. The only risk is plugging something into a port and having it slip towards the motherboard. Then it will short out a component. The chances of this happening are extremely low, but there is still a chance. Another thing to think about is that your PC will have a lot of space for dust to gather. If you regularly clean your PC and don’t work in a dusty environment, it shouldn’t be an issue. Still, there isn’t any risk to installing it, but there are some slight risks to leaving it off, so we suggest putting it on.

May 15, 2022 -

Hey, I recently put together my (mostly) new build but now my IO-shield seems to be slightly... scuffed.

https://i.imgur.com/CXLnv46.jpg

So since If I understand correctly, I have to reseat the motherboard and I'd rather not have to do it a third time, can someone please explain to me (like if I was an idiot), how to do this correctly? I've read you might occisionally have to bend the metal prongs before installing the motherboard, but which direction? Probably towards the motherboard right?

Also for reference, the "incorrect" IOs are Lan, USB 3c and USB whatever it is right (the red one), right?

February 15, 2023 - It is challenging to install the IO shield for so many people because there isn’t much “wiggle” room in your case.
