what motherboard should i pair with i7 14700k
There's many, many options. You don't have to stick to Asus, they just have good branding, but really any of the big makers are typically good: Asrock, MSI, Gigabyte, Asus. For Intel i7 I would probably avoid the cheapest boards, especially the Asrock ones, they skimp on VRM which is needed to get max performance from the CPU. So look for any ATX Z690/Z790 boards above like 200 dollars. Just for some examples: Z790 Tomahawk from MSI, Z790 Aorus Elite from Gigabyte, Z790 TUF Gaming from Asus, Z790 Steel Legend from Asrock. There are more models though. More on reddit.com

November 27, 2023 - There are also a plethora of considerations that we take into account when analysing motherboards: ... Yes it will. You may have to update the BIOS of your chosen board, but it should work without any problems once this is done. It depends on your use-case and budget. The 14700K isn’t the most exciting generational performance upgrade that we’ve seen. But despite this, it is still Intel’s best Core i7 option when it comes to performance alone.

Sorry if this has been flogged to death, but I figure it’s good to keep the discussion up-to-date!
I’ve recently picked up a 14700k and I’m wondering which motherboards are the way to go, or rather, which ones to avoid. Eyeing off the Z790 chipset.
Budget is $500 AUD, but would prefer not to spend any more than I have to.
Thanks in advance.

I picked up the Asus Rog Z690 hero for my I7-14700K. Mainly because it was on sale and a lot cheaper than the Z790 counterpart. And i'm running with G.Skill Ripjaws S5 6400mhz CL32 32gb kit. It's running perfectly fine and stable.

The i7-14700K is a beast! For a gaming and overclocking build, a Z790 chipset motherboard is your best bet. The MSI Pro Z790-A Max WiFi offers excellent value, while the MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk MAX and ASRock Z790 Steel Legend are also popular choices. For higher-end options, consider the Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Elite AX or MSI MEG Z790 ACE. Research specific models for compatibility with your other components. Avoid older chipsets like Z690 as they may require a BIOS update.

He's also thinking of getting 64 GB DDR4 and with his current 16 GB - making it about 80 GB in total.
Don't bother.
80GB has no benefit over 64GB.
Mixing that may work, it may fail.

3000 CL15, and you are looking at 3200 and 3600 kits. The thing is you can always try, just no guarantee it will boot, or that you won't be forced to run 2133 or 2400 to get them to play nice together. Just not worth it.
Same price, probably go for the Aorus. Saving about $50, more than enough for DDR5 in place of DDR4.
