They seem similar but the intellibed has a thicker "gel matrix" as far as I can tell from testing both out at the local Mattress Firm. Anyone got thoughts on the difference between these two? Intellibed is 3x+ the price point...

Waited a few months to post this here but thought it might help someone. I was a Purple lurker for years- had watched all the ads, laid on it at the store and was completely sold on the idea that when it was time to buy a new mattress, the Purple is what it would be- no question.
In July of last year my back pain hit a boiling point for me, so I decided it was time. I looked up the nearest Mattress Firm that sold Purples. We have two Mattress Firms near our mall- no more than a mile from each other. We show up to what I think is the right one. We walk in and the salesman greets us. I ask where the Purples are, and he informs me that I’m in the wrong store. I thank him. As my wife and I turn to leave, he stops us and says- are you guys wanting to buy a Purple? If so, you owe it to yourself to lay on an Intellibed. “Oh no thank you” I scoff, seeing the higher-than-Purple price tag. He insists again “I promise you, you’re not going to be disappointed.” Hesitantly, I agree and lay down on the Nightfall model. And goddamn if it isn’t the most wonderful mattress I could ever imagine.
But my heart has been so set on Purple. To do right by my previous self, I asked him if we could go down to the other store just to lay on the Purples and compare before making a final decision. He said “sure, no problem” and off we went. Got to the next store and tried all three Purple they had- no comparison to the Intellibed. If anything it made the Purple feel extra gelatinous and not in a pleasant way.
We returned to the original MF and signed the papers for the Intellibed Nightfall. We got a great deal (nearly 4K off MSRP) plus free TempurPedic pillows. That was in July and ever since, my back pain has disappeared. Also it has a 20 year warranty so I’m basically determined to die happily in this thing. 😂
Cannot recommend highly enough. Don’t let the sticker price scare you- ask what the manager can do for you. This ended up being our best investment in years.
Years ago, I read Sleep Smarter by Shawn Stevenson and bought a queen-sized Intellibed on his glowing recommendation. I still very much love this mattress.
I’m now in the market for a king sized mattress and my first thought was to get another Intellibed… but their website search results on google redirect to Purple’s Luxe line.
I understand Purple has purchased Intellibed. Have they in fact rebranded the Intellibed mattress as their Luxe line? Is that why Intellibed links from google searches go to Purple Luxe?
Did Intellibed always have so many different models? I recall there only being one model and very little to do in the decision making process. Anyone have a sense of whether quality and materials are the same as before the acquisition?
I am 6’3, 195 and primarily a side sleeper. I have bad shoulders and need soft but supportive. I have slept in a Purple 4 but was too soft - I woke up every day with lower back pain that was too much, but the Purple 3 felt really great.
I have an opportunity to buy a brand new Intellibed Midnight but will take some effort to get it, and I won’t be able to try it out. It is still boxed up and unfortunately, there is nowhere local for me to try one.
For those who have, it is worth the effort? It would actually be cheaper than a Purple 3 and I would get an adjustable base thrown into the deal.
Any information/feedback would be greatly appreciated!
It’s absolutely worth the jump from purple to intellibed.
Way better quality, way longer warranty with a lot less hoops to go through to have it if needed, but they have such few warranty claims, I don’t think it’s much of a concern.
It’s just whether or not you want to take the plunge on something more expensive for better, longer lasting products
Assuming that the Intellibed Midnight is truly brand new that would be an exceptional deal and I can understand the appeal. It's clearly a superior build to the Purple but without having a chance to try it or any return or exchange option it would be a risky proposition. I've learned the hard way over the years that a more expensive mattress is not necessarily better in support or comfort for any specific individual and can actually turn out to be worse.
Even if you had a chance to try it out in a store that's not the same as being able to sleep on it for a period of time to see if it's a good match for your needs. So the pricing is quite attractive but the risk is high. The Intellibed Midnight is quite different in build and feel than the Purple with its multiple layers of gel matrix along with layers of latex and Serene foam. Unless you're the gambling type and can afford the loss if it doesn't work out I'd have to pass and get a mattress with an option to return or exchange. Good luck whatever you decide!
We currently have a full tempur-pedic (almost 6 years) and my husband has always hated it. I slept fine on it up until 6 months ago. It deteriorated quickly for the price we paid; we're a little sore about it.
After an extended trip away, my husband got some really good night rests (first in YEARS). This pushed us to talking more seriously about buying a new mattress finally.
We spent the better part of Saturday and today laying on some with our own pillows and decided to pull the trigger on the beautyrest only because it was 1k cheaper than the already obscene price of the intellabed.
Now we're wondering if we made the right choice. We don't want to spend a ton of money for a bed that'll crap out on us within 5 years. But that intellabed was SO comfortable.
Would love to hear people's experiences after having either long term, like 6 months -1 year+. Do they breakdown? Do they get that crappy hard lump in the middle? Do you notice sagging? Do they stay comfortable?
My biggest concern is all this "fancy" new concepts they introduce and it crapping out too quickly. Just want something reliable that allows us to sleep, preferably pain free.
The intellibeds are very nice- I couldn’t afford one so I went with a purple. After 1 year I’m still happy. But yeah the intellibed is pretty awesome, but I have no idea how they hold up.
I’ve had the midnight for a couple of months and trialed the purple 3. I am a large and wide individual. Can’t attest to the multi year usage unfortunately.
I’ll say the purple 3 was great except for my shoulders, caused a lot of numbing and pain. Cooling? Great. Back? Great. Just the shoulders. Due to the numbing, I chose to return it. I waited till the last week of the return policy as I loved the mattress in every other way and ended up giving up.
So now we move to the next mattress, the midnight. I ended up with an open box (5 yr add on warranty) for the same price as the purple 3 after they hiked the prices like crazy. This thing is next level. I wake up with little hip pain (had it for a decade), no shoulder pain, and runs cool enough not to sleep hot. Not purple cool, but not hot.
If you are worried about longevity, I’d put intellibed over purple just based on my own research and chatting with a dozen MF employees (yes, I am that stubborn that I went back over a dozen times to try mattresses). the return rates and issues seem higher on purple than intellibed. Also this being hospital grade technology made me feel a bit more comfortable.
