You've been moved to a "unified distribution". There are 3 versions of IntelliJ IDEA right now: Paid (Ultimate) Free (packages the entire Ultimate, with disabled functionalities) Open Source (ex Community) The Free version ships with more free-of-charge functionalities compared to the Open Source one. The Open Source version is released directly on GitHub, but the result is the same as the previous version downloaded from the JetBrains website.

What I'll say, as an ultimate pack subscriber, is that the community edition is a quality ide with almost every feature one may conceivably want built in or just a plugin away. But, if you're like me, and spend most of your work day in an ide, I'm more than willing to spend a bit of money for the rest of the features / other tailor made ides / to support development of the tool I use every day. That said many of my coworkers use vs code. If you look at the comparison chart and think it's worth it go for the ultimate edition.

I had to switch to an Ultimate edition recently, because I started to work with Spring, as it is more convenient .So to answer your question, it really depends on your needs, but the main selling point of the ultimate edition for me are plugins and Spring support.

I know that it's the paid version Ultimate that has support for JavaScript, front-end frameworks, and some languages like PHP, SQL and Go, however the Community version is open source, so theoretically the community could at least create add-ons for making it support the technologies that the paid version supports.
Am I missing something?

JetBrains has invested hundreds of developer-years in the features that are part of Ultimate. It's indeed possible for the community to create replacements, but I assume most people think that buying a license is a better use of their time/money.

I'm currently evaluating the Ultimate edition. Apparently however, we can install plugins that we need. So in theory, we can just install a few plugins in the community edition to replicate the ones in the Ultimate edition. (Also, I don't really seem to need all the other plugins in Ultimate).
So can IntelliJ IDEA community edition be used for professional work? And has anyone tried?
I am in Web-Dev.

Yes. You can use IDEA community edition for professional work. You can install various plugins in community edition but many of them are marked as ultimate/premium which you can’t install in IDEA community edition.

I haven't delved into the plug-in world and have typically used Ultimate professionally -- I can say Ultimate is a very good produce and makes running services, debugging, running SQL/connecting to DBs all a breeze. I'm not sure which of the enhancements are Ultimate vs Community (obviously you can do all those things on Community to some extent), but Ultimate is for me worth the sticker price in terms of productivity, as not having so many features and taking time to set-up (and inevitably debug) plug-ins sounds like a real time sink. If your company won't stump the $100/year, or whatever it is they obviously don't value your time and it would be a big red flag for me. If it's for school, Community is plenty and the occasionally weird behavior of plug-ins is probably a good learning experience, lol

It gives the impression that you're being pushed to pay for an IDE that feels incomplete. At this point, I think VS Code might be a better alternative to JetBrains’ new direction. ... At my previous job I used IntelliJ ultimate that the company provided. At my job now we are using eclipse, which I absolutely hate. I decided to go back and download IntelliJ community edition, and I couldnt be happier. Debating if I should just foot the bill and buy myself ultimate.
Having said that, one of the gripes I had with the ultimate is that release after release it seemed it was getting more unstable. It would crash more frequently and take longer to index things. I assumed it was because they were adding more bells and whistles and making the software more complicated.
Anyone know if the community edition, due to it being more simple, is faster and more stable than the ultimate? I dont really need a lot of the advanced features of the ultimate, and would prefer to have something more stable.

I don’t have any stability problems with Ultimate. As far as indexing time the 2024.2 release notes has this: Faster time to code In the 2024.2 release, we've enhanced the startup experience, enabling you to dive into coding significantly faster. They are the same codebase so there should be no difference, the difference is included plugins. I only ever have issues when there is a corrupt index or some other internal data, but there is an option in the menu’s to rebuild all of those things which usually fixes things.
