The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is a phonetic notation system that is used to show how different words are pronounced. Unlike many standard alphabets where one phonetic symbol can often represent multiple sounds (e.g., the "o" in the words "do," "no," and "not" are all pronounced ...

What is the best way to learn the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)?

It is mostly a straight memorisation exercise. Depending in your memory skills it could be as little as an hour or so, through to several hours over a couple of weeks to get it locked in.

My suggestions.

  1. Print out a copy

  2. Recite in order several times

  3. Use it to spell out words, reference your printout as required. You can use any printed material such as book or magazine as your source of words.

  4. As per 3 but without peeking at the printout. Note any you keep getting stuck on and look them up at the end. Focus on these few.

  5. Leave it for a day/week. Try 4 again. Focus on relearning the ones you forgot.

  6. Repeat 5 as required until the are stuck in your memory.

Is it worth taking the time to learn the IPA (international phonetic alphabet)?
I think it's the best way to practice pronunciation even if you have access to native speakers because it keeps everything consistent, once you've learned the symbols and have associated them to the syllables of the words you won't have to worry about trying to pick up the pronunciation of words by listening to accents or rapid or slurred speech. There's a lot of nuances in speaking and it's a huge benefit when you can look up words in a dictionary and get the pronunciation along with the definition, you've just accomplished 2 tasks at the same time! Very cool! It was interesting to see which ones my local dialect has as essentially identical. "Pot" and "far" have more or less the same vowel sound for me. More on reddit.com
