Make sure the bent metal pieces aren't stuck. It takes some wiggling and working it in angles, but it should click right into place. Some cases have elevated anchor points, so make sure the holes line up on the mobo.

Can confirm it is a tight fit with them when first installing make sure to put good pressure around the edges of the IO shield from the inside so it stays flush with the case cutout.

So, long story short, I thought the bits that stuck out on my I/O shield weren't supposed to be there as I was putting in my motherboard wrong and, well... I tried to bend them.
Where can I get a new one? I have an Asus P8Z77-V LK.

Okay. I have a way to fix this. First, tape the I/O shield on the sides onto the back of the case. Then, install your motherboard. Lastly, remove the tape. The ports on the back of the motherboard should hold the I/O shield in place. It'll be loose, but it should stay.

As a perfectionist, I would take the motherboard out and do it properly.
First, test fit the shield to the motherboard outside of the case.
Sometimes you need to bend the tension prongs a bit.
If you fitted the I/O shield properly, you should have no clearance issues. Make certain that the shield is pressed into the case opening fully on all 4 sides.
When I insert the motherboard, I see that the shield and ports mate properly.
I first put in the standoff screw that is closest to the shield.
Sometimes you need to use that as a pivot to get the motherboard firmly against the shield so you can put in the next standoff screw.
Leave the screws a bit loose until you get them all in, then tighten them up a bit at a time in rotation.
OTOH, if it all works, you can make a case for leaving it be.
I would fix it.

If I reseat the motherboard, will I have to unplug all of the cables and the water cooler. If I have to do that I don't think I will bother.

January 5, 2011 - standoffs wont come loose, they're on there pretty well I/O shield: if its what i'm thinking of, tabs will only be "blocking" ports that a metal square goes into. the tabs are meant to push on either side of the motherboard attachment that goes into them.
