Why do Emojis look the same on WhatsApp and the iOS keyboard but on Android they use a different style?
tl;dr version: There are two ways to send emojis, but either way depend on the viewing device's manufacturer as to how the emoji appears. Long version: There are two ways emojis are implemented. The original is via text replacement - the most common with smiley faces, starting in online chat sites such as AOL Instant Messenger and ICQ. In this mode, a set series of characters is replaced with an image. For example, if I typed and sent Hello! :-) The recipient computer would receive Hello! :-) and match the characters :-) to "smiley_face.jpg". So the recipient would see my text, and then an image of a smiley face, such as these . This method of text-replacement started showing up in text messaging after color screens on cell phones became popular. Because support for the replacement and implementation of which "faces" were matched varied, some people would see :-) and some would see smiley_face.jpg - but since the images were developed internally, every manufacturer had different styles. Google search query with lots of examples . So, emojis became popular. At the same time, the Unicode character encoding standard became popular. Unlike very limited font encodings like ASCII, Unicode has virtually limitless ability to expand, and so it did - to many things you wouldn't think exist in a font. Non-Roman character sets such as Arabic were added, as well as special characters that modified others, such as adding a šymbol, sɹǝʇɔɐɹɐɥɔ ƃuıddıʃɟ, ᴀɴᴅ ᴍᴀᴋɪɴɢ sᴍᴀʟʟᴄᴀᴘs. Hᴇʜ, ʜᴇʜ. There were also non-character symbols added, for example ☂ (umbrella) and ♵ (recycle symbol 3). These are not images, they are text - you can copy and paste them into a text document, change font size, etc. Because they are text, they are implemented by each font differently - and some fonts not at all. So, back to emojis. At some point, someone got the bright idea to add emoji characters to the Unicode standard - this is the second, newer way they're implemented. It simplifies things greatly, because Unicode 263A will always be "white smiling face" ☺. And there's the rub - because it's a font character and not an image, every font that implements it may use a different representation of that character. Look at this page (click view all) and you can see that even in something as simple as a smiley face, there's great variation. The linked "local font test tool" on that page is even more illuminative. Here's a screenshot of some of my fonts. Oh, and to compare to the first method, this is how my text would send: Hello! [U+263A character] Which would be represented on the receiving system by whatever the font in use has at that character space. More on reddit.com

WhatsApp makes its own unique emojis – that look similar to Apple's | WhatsApp | The Guardian
October 3, 2017 - WhatsApp’s 1.2bn users given iOS-style emojis that differ from those on Facebook and Messenger, adding to general air of cross-platform confusion ... WhatsApp has created its own range of emoji for its more than 1.2 billion users, shunning those created by Apple, Google and Samsung. The new icons, visible for the first time in a beta version of its Android app, are nearly identical to those created by Apple, which WhatsApp had previously used not only in its iOS app, but also in its Android and Windows versions.

How to Get iPhone Emojis on Android (2025) - No Root
October 13, 2025 - Using the same process for any other keyboard app, you can enable iOS (or any emoji style) emojis for your Android device! Some keyboards offer iOS-style sticker packs for exact appearance. Just keep in mind that it's only visible to you and not the person you're texting. But on the bright side, it's easy to switch back to the default keyboard anytime! Works system-wide in text fields, but not in apps that override emoji rendering (WhatsApp, Telegram, and apps that have their own style of emojis).
