If I set the Website setting (aA in address bar when visiting the site) to Desktop website the bug was gone. If I set it back to mobile site it would reappear. I had a setting for macrumours to loadDesktop by default. If I set it to mobile it would now also show the bug on my iPad. I could not reproduce this behavior on my iphone. It would always open the link correctly.

Sadly using Safari is not the answer I would hope for LOL
Especially since opening a new tab in Safari doesn’t produce the News Feed that I get on Edge. I just want to be able to have an option to open in a new tab, right now the only options are Open, Copy or Share with none of those allowing me to open it in a new tab so I can keep where I am at on the main tab…

if you want the add tab "+" sign in a different spot, you can go into Safari>View and choose Customize Toolbar · you will see the icons in the toolbar start to shake. then you can drag and drop the "+" sign to a new spot on the toolbar.

Noticed upon launching safari that the option to “open in new tab” for links is gone and “open in background” is in its previous position. i’m not really sure if this is a bug or part of the new update since the update details did not include this in its description.
