I haven’t tried any generic keyboard. But I’m using the Magic Keyboard and it kinda feels cheap to me. I wish it’s more sturdy. If you can find a good one, then do it. I have a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse but I don’t use that much because I hate having to replace batteries. Although it feels much better for typing. Answer from DaniGirl111 on reddit.com

Is it worth getting the Smart Keyboard over a generic keyboard?

Apple really screwed us (Smart Keyboard Folio)
Not sure why Apple doesn’t make a Folio style for the Pro but I absolutely will not abide the Magic Keyboard slander. For those of us who write, that thing is an absolute treasure. Now, with your blasphemy out of the way, I’m sure some good third parties make something that should float yer boat. Check out Logitech and maybe Belkin. I’m sure others here will have good recommendations. More on reddit.com

Magic Keyboard or Smart Keyboard Folio - students
I've owned both, and wouldn't buy the magic kb again. I would definitely get another smart kb folio though. As for the magic kb: The price is ridiculous. It provides no protection. It makes a 12.9 iPad bulkier and heavier than a macbook air. It doesn't allow for portrait usage (for $350, on a machine where the selfie cam practically demands portrait orientation, they couldn't have figured out a way to make it swivel?). It doesn't wear particularly well. Did I mention the outrageous price? More on reddit.com

Goodbye to Apple’s Smart Keyboard Folio, the best iPad Pro accessory | The Verge
May 8, 2024 - Before I get to the praise, let’s touch on the negatives. The Smart Keyboard Folio has no trackpad, so unless you pair a mouse with your iPad, the only way to navigate around is by touching the screen. That’s not ideal over long durations, but the product’s whole purpose, at least to me, has always felt like a keyboard tailored for short bursts of productivity.

January 11, 2025 -

After using the Magic Keyboard for several years now, the realization that there's no Smart Keyboard Folio for the newest M4 iPad pros hit me. Why isn't the option there? It was superior to the Magic Keyboard in so many ways for someone who uses their device for art / browsing

Smart Keyboard Folio:

can be folded behind iPad without removing

iPad screen > tiny trackpad for navigation

weighs way less

costs way less

I acknowledge the magic keyboard provides backlight and an extra charging port, but I am willing to trade both for all the positives the Smart Keyboard Folio provided

I really don't need an inferior laptop-like experience, the Magic Keyboard takes away from the iPad's greatest strength: you got a big touch screen / trackpad right in front of you

The non-availability’/supply of the Smart Folio Keyboard is The Single Thing preventing me updating my M1 Pro 11” to its M4 equivalent. I like everything I’ve seen of the M4 and the kit itself is glorious… but I intensely dislike the idea of having to have a [Magic] keyboard that’s that heavy and that bulky. (And yes, I know it’s lighter/slimmer than its predecessor; doesn’t stop it being too heavy and bulky for me.) It’s three times twice (edit to correct) the weight of my Smart Folio Keyboard, I don’t need a trackpad, and once removed - to use the iPad Pro to read, say, the Smart Folio Keyboard is so thin, it’s almost absurd, ie easy to slide into my bag. The weight comparison between an M1 Pro 11” with Smart Folio Keyboard and M4 equivalent with a Magic Keyboard is equally absurd: 767 grams (1.69 pounds) vs 1,047 grams (2.31 pounds) It genuinely hasn’t happened yet - no matter how much people love the Logitech or ESR keyboards - but, seriously, the moment I see a third party folio keyboard with gloriously positive reviews that all say “This is the folio keyboard that Apple should have released for the M4”, that’s the time I look to upgrade.

Why doesn’t the Apple Smart Keyboard work on my iPad? I’ve had this keyboard for 4 years now but a few months ago, it stopped working all...
Answer (1 of 4): Isn’t it called a Smart Keyboard because it doesn’t rely on pairing and it’s own battery but connects to the iPad with those three metal and magnetic dots? First check for a iPadOS update. Check both the iPad and the dots on the keyboard for dirt.

Pardon my language but I think this is a pretty damn nifty keyboard. It does have its quirks like the chunky arrow key arrangement Apple was big on at the time but, on the whole, it’s a very lovely keyboard to use. The fine woven keys took a little getting used to but now I love them, plus they’re fun to fiddle with when the case is folded around the back.

It’s just amazing to me how remarkably well these two 7 year old products still hold up in 2025.
