Keeble App - App Store
I have recently installed the Keeble keyboard on my iPad, nand found it to be a perfect fit for my accessibility problem (advanced ARMD). I am particularly impressed with the 'test' function of the App that allowed me to easily check out the various settings without committing to it. That allowed me to quickly decide what worked best for me (Purple Rain with simplified querty layout). Another great feature I like is the ability to use it in conjunction with Apples's Smart Typing feature.

r/ipad on Reddit: The smart keyboard folio is the anti-apple device in the whole ipad ecosystem
May 29, 2024 -

Long time Windows and Android user here. With all the hype around AI and the new m series chips, I wanted to give Apple a second chance with the new m2 air. I have no intentions to fully convert, but I thought having at least one device from Apple camp would grant me some capabilities that's not available in Windows/Android side

The ipad is nice. It's in the same ballpark with a comparable Android tablet. There is nothing you can do with one and can't do with the other. It's just different. But the keyboard is a whole different story. As per the title, it stands out from the rest of the ecosystem, it almost feels like it doesn't belong

To set the scene, consider how Apple designs and markets products. First, they create a hype by inventing a problem that that doesn't even exist. Then they create an elegant and expensive device to solve this problem with unique ways, which in turn creates its own problems that requires workarounds. When it comes to marketing/sales, they introduce many variants that practically do the same thing but somehow convince people to pay the top dollar and update very frequently to gain little to no improvements in real life use cases.

Now enter the folio keyboard. It's a basic keyboard that's introduced 5 years ago that looks and functions like how you would expect. You put it on, and it works. And since it's not trying to be something else, it's rugged and more importantly cheap in Apple terms.

Look at the magic keyboard in comparison. It tries "transform" the device to a so-called laptop replacement and adding a lot of bulk and weight while trying to do so. You lose too much, i.e. the practicality of the tablet to gain a little. And to make it worse, you have to pay a lot for that. Even the keyboards designed by Logitech follow this design philosophy. They make the device bulky and increase the footprint.

Back to the folio keyboard itself, apart from being very slim and light, the ability to fold the keyboard to the back, and the ease of putting it on/off helps keep the practicality of a tablet. And when it's attached, since the keyboard is sitting very close to the screen, you can lift your finger and interact with the elements without lifting your hand.

In conclusion, the folio keyboard elevates the capabilities of the ipad without getting in the way. Without it I would be hesitant to keep the ipad but thanks to this combo I'll stay

Small update : I forgot to mention the "lapability" factor. This keyboard stays relatively stable on the lap. Not as good as a laptop but again, it works when needed

After using the Magic Keyboard for several years now, the realization that there's no Smart Keyboard Folio for the newest M4 iPad pros hit me. Why isn't the option there? It was superior to the Magic Keyboard in so many ways for someone who uses their device for art / browsing

Smart Keyboard Folio:

can be folded behind iPad without removing

iPad screen > tiny trackpad for navigation

weighs way less

costs way less

I acknowledge the magic keyboard provides backlight and an extra charging port, but I am willing to trade both for all the positives the Smart Keyboard Folio provided

I really don't need an inferior laptop-like experience, the Magic Keyboard takes away from the iPad's greatest strength: you got a big touch screen / trackpad right in front of you

Not sure why Apple doesn’t make a Folio style for the Pro but I absolutely will not abide the Magic Keyboard slander. For those of us who write, that thing is an absolute treasure. Now, with your blasphemy out of the way, I’m sure some good third parties make something that should float yer boat. Check out Logitech and maybe Belkin. I’m sure others here will have good recommendations.

The non-availability’/supply of the Smart Folio Keyboard is The Single Thing preventing me updating my M1 Pro 11” to its M4 equivalent. I like everything I’ve seen of the M4 and the kit itself is glorious… but I intensely dislike the idea of having to have a [Magic] keyboard that’s that heavy and that bulky. (And yes, I know it’s lighter/slimmer than its predecessor; doesn’t stop it being too heavy and bulky for me.) It’s three times twice (edit to correct) the weight of my Smart Folio Keyboard, I don’t need a trackpad, and once removed - to use the iPad Pro to read, say, the Smart Folio Keyboard is so thin, it’s almost absurd, ie easy to slide into my bag. The weight comparison between an M1 Pro 11” with Smart Folio Keyboard and M4 equivalent with a Magic Keyboard is equally absurd: 767 grams (1.69 pounds) vs 1,047 grams (2.31 pounds) It genuinely hasn’t happened yet - no matter how much people love the Logitech or ESR keyboards - but, seriously, the moment I see a third party folio keyboard with gloriously positive reviews that all say “This is the folio keyboard that Apple should have released for the M4”, that’s the time I look to upgrade.

Smart Keyboard not connecting after update - Apple Community
Your Smart Keyboard ceasing to function shortly after a system software update is likely to be entirely coincidental. As an initial step, disconnect your keyboard from your iPad and then perform a forced restart - as doing so will often resolve an isolated software issue: On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

r/ipad on Reddit: My Review of the Magic Keyboard after 1 week of usage
January 25, 2025 -

First and foremost, I don’t like how YouTubers always promote the iPad Pro’s. I personally use an iPad Air M2 13” 256GB, which is more than enough power for me personally. I’ll be honest, I never saw why it Apple would make a Magic Keyboard for the iPad, as I always thought it was just a flex to be real with you. (Okay, I’ll admit I was a hater😂), then after buying one luckily brand new sealed at a significant discount, I now see why people say you can potentially use this in a laptop-like way, I’ve been primarily using this setup mainly the whole week intentionally with my full time job and studies, it really did the wonders for me. I feel less distracted than using my MacBook to be quite frank and felt I was way more productive using this Magic Keyboard with my iPad Air 13”, I personally use it as an alternative laptop just in case if my M1 MacBook Air breaks, god forbid, it really excelled in the experience for me with the iPad. One thing I was really concerned with in the beginning was the battery life as I was scared a full charge wouldn’t last the whole day. Luckily, it does! I take it everywhere with me now more than my MacBook, even to the office, I only go once a week for meetings that mandatory to attend. I do my banking, signing documents is more easier (now just need to get the Apple Pencil, will probably get the Apple Pencil Pro sometime later in the year), sending emails, sending documents from my iCloud Drive from my stuff from my MacBook, making and editing documents to give to new clients. Taking it to meeting to make notes (with the note app) instead of having a diary, it honestly makes my life so much easier, I don’t really care about not having the cellular version of the iPad, as i use my iPhone as hotspot and buy a lot of data monthly, and mainly around WiFi luckily. People are even shocked at the workplace that I am using an iPad to do my work, as they don’t really know what an iPad is capable of. In first world countries in the field I’m in. They mainly use iPads with a Magic Keyboard to do their work as it involves a lot of research/prospecting in properties. The keyboard hasn’t left my iPad ever since. I really wouldn’t consider myself a heavy user, due to the fact I don’t photo edit, video edit, I luckily have a professional photographer who specialises in taking photos of homes before putting it on the market and he is very good at it. Then just stuff for me and then emails the photos.

Im kind of tired of the apple keyboard. Sure its clean and intuitive but the missing number row and the fact that when you long press the numbers, it doesnt show the superscript numbers for example are things that make the experience just worse than the average android phone with gboard/florisboard.

I am looking for something similar to florisboard or if that isnt existent something that mimics gboard the way it is on android devices.

I have tried and didnt like:

  • swiftkey

  • gboard

  • typewise keyboard (- apple keyboard)
