I've read online that 5G capability started with the 12. But someone I know has an iPhone that states it is an 11 Pro Max in the 'About' section in Settings, and yet it says 5G in the upper right corner of the phone.

No, it is not 5G capable, and it was one main reason why I switched to the 15 when it debuted last year. The 11 would sometimes be slow for me, and I noticed that phones with 5G usually did not connection issues
