Do I need a MagSafe case to use a MagSafe car mount?
We highly recommend using a MagSafe-compatible case for your iPhone when attaching the phone to a MagSafe car mount. Such a case ensures a strong attachment compared to the ineffective or absent attachment of non-MagSafe cases, which won't allow the mount's magnets to exert a strong enough attraction to hold the phone securely.
You can also go without a case entirely, which will ensure a strong connection. However, we wouldn't recommend going without a case, as it leaves your phone susceptible to costly accidental damage. If you have the iPhone 16, for instance, see our guide to the best iPhone 16 cases for various MagSafe-compatible options.
What should I look for in a MagSafe car mount?
When looking for a MagSafe car mount, you should be sure that it is compatible with your desired mounting point, be that a car vent, dashboard, cupholder, or windshield.
Another key consideration is the wireless charging aspect of MagSafe technology: Do you want a car mount that can charge your iPhone while you're on the go or one that will just hold the phone securely?
Though Apple recently introduced faster 25W MagSafe charging in the iPhone 16 series, our extensive research into the options currently available has yet to produce a car mount we can recommend that directly enables 25W charging.
On that note, the best MagSafe car mounts on the market provide a secure magnetic connection for any of the best iPhones and up to 15W wireless charging. More than anything, a car mount should be sturdy enough in its attachment to prevent the mount and your phone from falling off their mounting place.
Is MagSafe strong enough for a car mount?
Yes, MagSafe technology is strong enough to securely attach any MagSafe-compatible iPhone (iPhone 12 series or later) to a car mount, provided that you either have a MagSafe-compatible iPhone case or no case.
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knew how strong the magnet on the iPhone 12 Pro Max is. I am in the market for a magnetic car mount and would like to not have to tape a magnet to my iPhone (see this product as an example: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/iottie-itap-2-magnetic-air-vent-car-mount-for-cell-phones-silver-black/6319179.p?skuId=6319179). Would this work without having to tape a magnet to my iPhone? I am not interested in a magsafe car mount as I will already be charging my phone when it is connected to CarPlay.
Thanks
Hello, I just wanted to share what I did just now.
For the past few years I’ve been a huge fan of magnetic mounts, in the car and around the home. I’ve been using the Scosche mounts for many years, and with the announcement of the MagSafe mounts that was quite exciting for me.
As MagSafe on iPhone is in the infancy and there are a handful of products announced, though nothing available for purchase other then the Apple MagSafe charger, I came up with my own mount.
I’m using an Arkon brand floor mount (attached to seat bolt) which has an AMPS bracket. The only reason I’m using this is my car has no real ideal dash mount spot (BMW i3). With the bracket I used some 3M command strips to stick the Apple charger to the ball head.
I don’t have pics of the phone on it, as I didn’t bring my other phone and it’s cold out right now. Though I’m quite satisfied with it, and I have the phone a good shake and it holds strong. This is with the weight of a 12 pro max with an Apple case on it.

edit: got me a Imgur account and added photos
I ordered the Belkin MagSafe vent mount. I'm waiting on delivery, but I'm optimistic.
I am thinking about doing something similar. I have a Scoche mount on the dashboard. I am going to try to stick one of the magnetic plates to the back of the magsafe charger and try to mount my phone on it. I don't know if magnetic to magnet to magnet is going to work, but I'll try.
