The Night Mode Portraits, exclusive to iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max, are shot with the main camera. Deep Fusion is used when light conditions aren't ideal, say, indoors. It triggers instead of Smart HDR and Night Mode. Deep Fusion uses four frames before you hit the shutter, four more once you do, and one long exposure shot. The 16-core Neural engine will select the best frames and create a high-quality HDR photo that is very detailed, sharp, and natural-looking.

December 13, 2020 - I used to have to manually under-expose every single iPhone photo I took in harsh light or against the sky. Now, the camera handles it so well that I rarely have to make an exposure adjustment before I tap the shutter button. This isn’t new with the 12 Pro Max — I also noticed this had gotten a lot better with the 11 Pro, and the improvement with the 12 Pro Max is almost imperceptible.

I'm very keen to see just what a difference this larger sensor might mean not just for my nighttime photos, but for capturing fine details in landscapes, or up close when taking macro images of flowers. A bigger sensor paired with Apple's image processing software is likely to be a potent combination. The iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max have three rear cameras.
