What is the best camera settings and feature to use when taking photos and videos with an iPhone 13? I'm going to New York this December and want to make sure i get the best photos and quality. I'm not bothered about saving space as I'm going to pay for extra storage on iCloud when i go. So storage probably wont be an issue.

Depends on how much work you want to put in. Shooting with RAW instead of JPEG or HEIF can give you the absolute best photo quality without a doubt! ..... if you know how to edit photos that is. Because that is a requirement when using RAW. If you just want to point-n-shoot without any editing, you're much more limited. Either just take photos the way you normally do, and deal with the way your phone automatically applies processing (boosting saturation, applying sharpening, "HDR" effects.etc). Shooting "bursts" will apply slightly less of that processing, which is preferable for some. Or. If you want realistic "true to life" looking photos, but still without the need to edit them. There are some third party apps that gives you that option.

So recently I went to the store recently and i compared my iphone 13 camera to the iPhone 13 present in the store there was a major quality diff.. Can anyone tell me why does that happen? Edit: I asked the apple guy he said they make the demo phones different all together.

Note that stores have good lighting there.

Did the store have an iPhone 13 on display? For reference, if they’ve got a newer model like 15 or 16 just know that these have bigger camera sensors that ought to make photos to look a lot nicer

Using a Celestron Astromaster 114Eq and Astromaster eyepiece set. With Nexyz phone adapter.

There won't be one best setting. It will be target dependent and will vary with magnification too. Possibly also sky conditions. Do some test runs and make sure detail is neither over nor under exposed in the frames / subs and make a compromise decision on noise. Go from there. You will want a camera app that offers full manual control and doesn't try to do AI processing. Straight up raw capture. I'm not an iPhone user so don't know the specific apps.

That 3×3 grid that appears on the camera screen? That’s there to assist with composition. Align the subject of your photos with the lines or intersection points. (e.g. Position someone’s face at one of the grid intersection points.) Look up “rule of thirds composition” for more insight on this technique. Be aware of lighting position. Don’t backlight your subject, but also don’t have people looking directly at the sun, unless you want a lot of photos of people squinting. Try to take photos of people in indirect light if you can, so you don’t get harsh shadows.

Tap to focus, tap to lock exposure settings, lock exposure at a different area, and move camera towards, your subject, etc. Use portrait mode, use grid lines to line up your framing, etc. Take several photos with slightly different settings Using an iPhone is really no different from using a good old film based SLR; your end result is a blend of composition and aperture, exposure time, ISO (sensitivity of film), etc. The big difference is that you can experiment and take hundreds or thousands of photos w/o any cost and pick out the best ones.

I lower the exposure on the camera when I go on stage it helps with how bright the stage lights are and helps keep a deep color contrast while I’m on stage. Film at highest frames per second as possible and highest quality. But obviously you’ll comprise storage. So a 10 minute set at 4k is 750mb per minute x 10 minutes 7.5 gigs Where when I leave it at natural settings I tend to get washed out, and appear super bright.

I have a 12 promax. I prefer to shoot using the front camera. I go to the camera settings and change the resolution to 60 fps . I turn off the HDR. I shoot in 4K. I always turn up the exposure just a little bit. Are use professional lighting equipment and I use the grid line so that I stay in frame. Once I start incorporating those things, my pictures looked a lot more clear. Almost as if the background was out of focus and I was the main thing.

..sucksss but mostly with selfies and mirror pics. I’ve had this phone for the past year and every time I take a picture or selfie, it makes me look washed out or like a watercolor painting with the auto editing. Has anyone been able to fix this?? Go to Settings -> Photos, scroll down to “View Full HDR”, slide the toggle off. Your camera photos should look better.

My phone (iPhone 13 mini) automatically sets a timer for when it’s dark, so the long exposure captures the lights even though they’re faint I’ve been able to capture them even though it seemed like there weren’t any lights

If you're going to Iceland then I would invest in a more professional camera app rather than the default app that comes with your phone. The settings aren’t the issue, it’s the camera app’s over-processing. You can’t change these unless you shoot in ProRaw format, but this isn’t worth it for most people unless you’re editing all your photos and okay with massive file sizes. As u/jpegfanboy has mentioned, try using third party apps and see if you like your photos better. These apps avoid the egregious sharpening and tone mapping. Some other apps I’d also recommend trying are No Fusion, mood camera, and (Not Boring) Camera. Most of these offer a free tier that you can give a try!

There are lots of apps but your best bet would be to try shooting in RAW and ProRAW. There is Halide app but it is kinda expensive as one time purchase and as subscription too. It has “zero-process mode” which is basically a RAW photo that is automatically processed and instantly converted to usable JPEG or HEIF file. Also there is a new entry - Camac. It costs just 20$ for full version and can be used for free too. It can shoot RAW images, though interface is kinda hard to understand. Also I’ve heard about Adobe’s Project Indigo camera but I had not used it. I used built-in RAW camera in Lightroom app (also can be used for free) and it seemed to be good enough. To shoot in Apple’s ProRAW you need to enable it in camera settings. It can give more natural colors at times, but noise reduction is still baked in

December 20, 2022 - I dunno if you can, I don't have an iPhone but it looks like it's changing white balance mid shot ... That’s correct and to add to your comment the built in app doesn’t let you lock white balance but third party apps like FilMIC pro will ... I think its autocorrecting the white balance. Basically you dont want anything to be set to Auto. There are "manual" camera apps that let you do this.

There’s been posts and lengthy articles on this topic but responses vary and they’re often complicated.

I’ve ruled out ProRes Log, but everything else I’m not sure about.

Here are some examples:

Enhanced Stabilization

Prioritize Faster Shooting

Enhanced stabilization - this will sacrifice the amount that you can “zoom out” on a video in order to produce a video that isn’t shaky. I highly recommend keeping this on. Action mode lower light - this feature uses the ultra-wide lens while shooting. It allows you to move the camera around a LOT and the end result is buttery-smooth. This process needs a lot of light because it’s using the ultra-wide lens, which needs more light to perform well. If you turn this on, they will let you use it in lower lighting conditions than usual, but the quality of the stabilization and overall image will not be of amazing quality. Off is the default choice here. Auto FPS - I actually hate this feature. It will drop your video frame rate if the light levels are very low. When the frame rate is lower, the sensor has more time to capture light in each frame. Basically it sacrifices your frame rate for a brighter image. In reality, the transition is clunky and 24fps looks really bad for anything other than cinema. I gave it a try for about a week, I’ve left it off ever since. HEIF max vs ProRAW - Use HEIF or HEIF Max as your default (HEIF max allows you to zoom in further to your images). ProRAW captures a LOT more data in your images, which allows you to make heavy edits with lighting and color. If you have no intention heavily editing a photo, keep this off… the photos it takes are huge (upwards of 50x larger than HEIF files). ProRES - If you don’t already know what this is, do not use it. This is for filmmakers. This produces MASSIVE video files that will eat up your storage very quickly. Prioritize faster shooting - What’s more important to you? Taking better photos or being able to snap many pictures back to back quickly, but at a lower quality? I keep this off, I want all my photos to be in the highest quality… but your needs may be different than mine.

Are you talking about still photography or videography? Generally speaking it is virtually impossible to get the image you have in your mind without doing any editing at all.

I just recently discovered that the lighting of the front camera when on video mode is so much better than taking an actual photo. So if you use video instead of photo when taking a selfie... you're actually going to get better results. It's not going to look dark and grayish, AND YOUR PORES AND WRINKLES ARE NOT HIGHLIGHTED. Also, you can just pick the video frame where you look the best.

Depending on the exact “problem” you’re experiencing, you can address it in a few other potential ways: Turn off the setting for View Full HDR. Take photos in burst mode to prevent Deep Fusion from activating and letting people see your pores when capturing photos in medium to medium-low light situations. Take photos in portrait mode and use one of the built-in lighting modes, like studio light and contour light. They add realistic lighting to your face (and body) that ends up smoothing out your face a bit. You can edit the intensity of the effect. You can edit also lighting modes when capturing or editing, and you can use them independently of the depth effect, which can be toggled off if you prefer. If you have an iPhone 15, you don’t even need to switch to portrait mode when capturing.

You can actually take a photo while the video is recording. Just drag the red button to right to start video and then tap the white button on right of screen to take photo when ever you want to.

Focus & lower exposure. Turn off long exposure though. Took this at last years EDC.

What the person above me said. Separate your friends from the Background by having a back light and side light Or just do all front lit. The long exposure mode is decent on iPhones. I always bring down the exposure just a tad especially if the subject is brighter than the background. You can also do portrait mode @ f1.4 And up the exposure by moving that lil sun icon up.

Hey!

So, my iPhone’s running iOS 26, and my picture quality are getting worse. It looks grainy, when I want to take zoomed picture it’s awful… I’m not too happy with the final look. The pictures looks better at night (videos are still fine, at least!)

Here are my settings: Did I mess something up? What are yours like? I’m really not a fan of my pictures anymore.

Maybe turn off everything in "preserve settings" other than "live mode" - leave that in and turn off Live Photos in the camera app Everything else should then reset to defaults when you open the camera so if you have messed a setting it will be back to how you got it One thing to note about zooming; phone cameras don't generally do optical zoom, then just take a digital picture then resize it, which does give poor results all round, as you cannot invent missing information. Move closer to your subject rather than using any form of zoom

Should have pro raw and resolution control turned on really so you can take 48mp photos, otherwise it defaults to 24mp

I’m trying to take good picture using my iPhone and I find the sharpness is not great. Any advice?

First off: good light. If you're shooting in poor light, you're going to get poor photos. Tell the phone what to focus on. Don't just hold the phone up and click. Tap to select what in the frame should specifically be sharpest. And while you're there, adjust the exposure by sliding up and down. Deeper blacks will make things look sharper, and phones tend to want to make a photo brighter when left to themselves. Don't use the physical buttons to activate the shutter. I know Apple just introduced a dedicated physical camera button and that was a big focus of the marketing, but if you're after the sharpest photo you can get, do not use that button to shoot. Or the volume buttons. Use the onscreen shutter button. And don't tap it. That shakes the phone, too. Try to think of it as just TOUCHING the screen. Even better, if you have the option, put the phone on a tripod or lean it on something and use a remote to activate the shutter. But, if you're hand holding, don't hold it out at arm's length and shoot. Hold the phone with BOTH hands, tuck your elbows into your body to brace, hold the phone closer, slowly exhale and at the same time you're breathing out, touch the shutter button.

I use the Moment camera app, it has a lot of settings similar to your camera, giving you more control over ISO, shutter speed, focus, etc. Also allows you to select which camera you’re using, since the Apple Camera app switches based off what it thinks it should use, even if you have 1x selected. Also, and this requires getting a case and lens, but I use the app in conjunction with their mobile lens, which are nice for taking into the city in my bag without taking a camera.

I just switched from a google pixel 6 to iPhone 13. I absolutely hate the camera on this phone. It over sharpens skin while flattening it aswell. I’ve already turned off the hdr setting. I think if I can’t figure out the camera I’m going to return it and get another pixel.

I thought you couldn't turn off the HDR in iPhones 13 and owards. I think you might've just disabled the HDR for videos, which wouldn't fix the issue with pictures. Some people use third party apps to avoid that issue (I don't have an iPhone 13 so I don't know how well that works).

Never really faced this issue, would love to know more ?
