Some tips I can give you for better results are: (They don't apply only to the 13 pro max) Avoid shooting with lighting behind the subject. Avoid taking photos when light is too strong or when sun is right above your head, it will create unflattering shadows. You can shoot whenever you want on cloudy/overcast days though. The clouds act like a soft box so your photos look better. Try stepping back and shooting with the 3x lens when shooting portraits of people. The 77mm equivalent is less distorting when it comes to human proportions and therefore you'll have a more professional photo. (my latest photos were taken like this) Don't overcrowd your photos. Find something that leads the eye, be it a subject or an inanimate object. Don't over process photos if you choose to edit them. Less is more here. No doubt, you can get great results from a phone camera, particularly the one on the Pro Max. So that's a great option for starting out. Depending on how deep you want to go with photography, it may or may not be what you need, though. You can't change lenses (even though the phone has 3, it is still relatively limited in options compared to an interchangeable-lens camera). It has no physical aperture control; the aperture for each lens is fixed, so you don't have full control of depth of field. There are manual features available, but they don't give you the full experience or function of a standalone camera. The iPhone also heavily post-processes the photos for you. This can be a crutch, preventing you from learning the finer points of exposure control, and ultimately might discourage you from diving more deeply into editing your images. The phone may have RAW capability (lets you access and edit the unprocessed, full image), but I'm unsure. All this could be discouraging if/when you move to an actual camera-- we get lots of "why does my phone take better shots than my $$$ camera?" questions, and this is largely why. The phone is basically a really advanced point-and-shoot that makes great shots for you. An actual camera, like the M50, will give you more tools, like an in-camera exposure meter (which is vital to understanding light and is the first tool in your camera you need to learn- it's where all your manually-exposed images should start), and will force you to learn to make those shots on your own and edit them later for full effect. It also has a much larger sensor for better light-gathering and the capability of ultimately making much higher-quality and sharper images. Either can be used to learn the basics of composition, learn how to recognize and use good light, etc. The rest boils down to how much you want to put into this. If you're looking to really learn how to manipulate and take control of your images, then a camera is the better choice. If you want something convenient that you can use to just develop a basic "eye," for shooting nice compositions, will do most of the hard work for you, and you don't have any interest in maximum image quality or the ability to enlarge/print your images much past handheld-device size, then the phone is perfectly fine. Personally, I have and use my phone and a moment lens a lot, since I almost always have that with me. But I also have and use a Fujifilm mirrorless and a full-frame Nikon.
