July 22, 2024 - Once your options are set, open the Camera app. Using the buttons at the top of the screen and the icons hidden in additional settings behind the down arrow (on iPhone 11 or higher), you can turn the flash on or off, enable or disable Live Photos, set a timer, add filters, and zoom in or out. If your phone supports the features, you can also manage Night Mode for low-light conditions, change the aspect ratio, and alter the exposure. If you want to set Portrait as your default mode, you can also set a default lighting and change the depth of field.

iPhone 15 Pro / Max Best Camera Settings | Simon Horrocks
Personally, I’m someone who is nearly always capturing video with my iPhone. Anyway, if you go into Preserve settings again and toggle on Camera Mode, whenever you open the camera app, it will be in the last mode you used. If you leave this off, it will always default back to photo mode.

r/iPhone15Pro on Reddit: Camera settings for iPhone 15 Pro Max
November 23, 2024 -

Hey everyone. Just got a new 15 Pro Max! I take pictures and videos all the time so I would like to get some advice on the best camera settings for this phone (those that are found under Settings > Camera). I heard a lot about Pro Raw, HDR, etc and honestly I don’t understand much so I would appreciate some guidance. Thank you!

I’m a photographer and recently back to an iPhone. I’ve been on android for many years and cameras. Here is a quick guide for the stock camera: There are 3 image formats: jpeg, Heif, and Pro Raw JPEG and Heif are we what we call lossy formats. They are photos that have all the processing applied and they are compressed images. If you edit them each time you lose a bit of quality. Heif is a newer and more efficient image format and I prefer this over jpeg. Raw is traditionally a completely unprocessed file with tons of data and hence a much more massive file. The idea is that you the photographer have control over how you edit and process the file and then export as a jpeg or Heif file. For ProRaw it is not truly a raw file as it is really a composite of multiple images that blend together more data so you get more information so that you can bring up shadows and bring down highlights to get a really great photo. Apple raws have some noise reduction and processing applied but much less than the Heif or JPEG files. For Heif and Pro Raw you can select max which outputs a 48mp file. For JPEG the max is 24mp. HDR refers to high dynamic range which blends multiple images at different exposures (darker, mid, and light) to create an image that has brighter shadows and non blown out highlights. What this does is help the camera not produce blown out skies or super dark shadows. At times it can produce artificial results but usually it produces great results. You cannot turn this off in the stock camera. It’s best to shoot non 48mp for more contrast scenes with bright backgrounds as the dynamic range will be less than at 12 or 24mp (due to pixel binning which means the camera bins pixels together for a cleaner brighter image). Photographic styles are styles created by Apple that are not filters but rather software settings that change the processing during capture. Filters are applied after an image is processed by camera. These only apply to JPEG and Heif photos and do not affect raw shots. I love vibrant settings as I feel camera the crushes blacks and shadows. For me I notice the following and usually do this: I find stock camera under saturates people’s skin so I usually add some vibrancy and adjust tint to slightly more to magenta. The stock editor is actually really good and I recommend starting with that. The other thing I usually do is up brilliance and contrast slightly and drop highlights. That’s a good place to start :) One thing I forgot to mention is in settings for camera turn on High Efficiency and Pro Raw/resolution control in Formats. And enable preserve settings too.

r/iphone on Reddit: What are the best settings for photo and video on iPhone 15 pro max…for average user?
November 7, 2023 -

Just got my 15 pro max. I am very happy so far, but I have to admit I am a bit confused by the settings for photo/video. More exactly I’m talking the formatting. I use “high efficiency” under camera capture. I use “24mp” under photo mode. And I turned on pro raw and “HIEFE” or whatever it’s called under the photo part and I turned on Apple pro res and “HDR” under the video part. It seemed like a waste of file size to do the “LOG” setting instead of the “HDR” under the Apple ProRes video setting, unless you are a professional video person.

Now I do have to say that I plan on filming some videos with this phone for my daughter that she may not watch for 20 years or more. See, I have terminal cancer and I’m trying to make videos for her so she can get to know me when she is older and also videos of advice for her. So I have been a little worried about going down the “high efficiency” formatting road rather than the “compatible” road. But, at this point, is this “high efficiency” formatting is the default for most Apple users I should be pretty safe with it right? Even though I wanna make sure that the formatting is good for the next 50 plus years, I am not made of unlimited money and I do need to kinda keep my file sizes to reasonable levels, because hard drives cost money that we don’t have a lot to throw around right now. Although I did see that you can plug a flash drive into your phone and record 4K 60fps video to it! That is pretty neat! If there is a way to do this but also ensure that that video uploads to our iCloud too, that would be the best solution for me I think!

Any advice is appreciated.

As for all other video settings in the camera tab, I pretty much have them all the highest they can go or turned on. Like “4K 60fps” for video and “4K 30fps” for cinematic. If that’s gives y’all any idea of my settings.

I know that recording video in 4K and at 30 or 60 fps uses a lot of space. But my thoughts where that in 20 years 1080p is going to look like 480p does now, so the best way for me to future proof my videos for my daughter is to record at the highest reasonable resolution. I may be wrong but it is just my thoughts.

September 19, 2025 - By default, the camera app shows the area outside of the actual frame you’re filming. Helpful in theory, but it can be distracting when you’re trying to compose a shot. Scroll down some more in the main camera settings, turn View Outside Frame off, and you’ll only see exactly what you’re recording. If you have a Pro iPhone model, you can film things extremely close up in macro mode.
