Would not recommend this at all. There is a high risk from whatever storage chip they use suddenly failing on you to being improperly installed. I’ve heard of it being done more as a fun experiment but it’s risky for the long term. I’ll be honest the XR is going on 5 years and if you need the storage why not upgrade phones? You can then invest in a phone with more storage while also being a big upgrade and then plan to keep it even longer than the XR. More on reddit.com

When it comes to buying a device with a storage unit, the temptation is always to get the one with the most storage space, because we don't want to run out of space, do we?
But how much storage do you need? Here's a quick explanation of the different storage capacities:
64GB: Limited storage. Not enough for some iPhone users.
128GB: Enough for basic use. Not enough for some iPhone users who regularly take photos, download songs, games, and videos, and install lots of apps. In a month and a half of using my iPhone 15+, I have filled up about 45GB of storage space. I don't even know if that'll be enough for 3 or more years, because it fills up so quickly.
256GB: Enough for the average user, but some users tend to go for 512GB.
512GB: Store and save your entire photos, video,s and movies and large files with ease on your phone.
1TB: Unlimited. Never worry about storage space and store your photos, videos , movies, games, large files for several years, or even longer.

There is no flash drive just soldered flash memory chips. · Sadly, you'll need to swap out the complete logic board which is quite expensive! Best to sell and buy a new unit with the larger storage. · UPDATE · While the flash chip can be replaced it does take a bit of skill, availability of the chip and the needed programer. This it's not a DIY project for a good 90% of us. · Even still as Tom pointed out there are risks if the upgrade will be stable and its already known some actions don't work correctly. · Given the market its still better to buy a new phone! If you must trade it in or even sell it your self to recover a good part of the costs of a new phone.
