The high def version of the photo is in the cloud. You need more storage so the high def version can “live” there and not on your phone. What is taking up space on your phone is the “thumbnail” for lack of a better term, so that you can see and interact with the photos without having to open iCloud.com each time you want to view or use a pic

So first of all, they are all included in your free plan, and all share that same 5GB you get for free. iCloud is where Apple stores your data. iCloud backup and iCloud Drive are two parts of it. iCloud backup takes your data from your devices and saves it in the cloud so that you can restore that data to a new device, or your current device if for some reason you have to run a factory reset. For example, an iCloud backup of your iPhone would include your messages, notes, safari browsing data, app placement, wallpaper, etc. You can also toggle all these in settings. Interesting to note here is that your photos backup is separate from everything else. So if you have backup of your device turned off, your photos will still backup unless you turn that off specifically as well. iCloud Drive is where your files (text documents, PDFs, etc) are stored. These use the same storage space as your backups, but are separate. For most people, the free 5GB is not enough. Personally, I pay for the $0.99 50GB plan and it covers everything I need.

There is no way a 5 year old could understand iCloud. It quite simply is very confusing. The docs describing it are confusing because it is a convoluted mess.

Hey everyone,

As I’m on the verge of buying a new phone I find myself struggling with the decision of storage. As the 256GB iPhone X has a price I can’t justify paying, my choices are the 256gb iPhone 8 or the 64gb iPhone X. I expect to need more than 64 gigabytes, but I’d still like to get the X. I came up with a solution which involves buying the 64gb iPhone X along with upgrading my iCloud storage to 200gb. I figured this would allow me to store most of my iPhone data (documents, pictures, videos, etc) in iCloud leaving enough room on my iPhone for things such as Spotify downloads and apps. While I typically don’t use a lot of apps, I do tend to take a lot of pictures, save a lot of documents, and download quite a few songs. I was wondering if any of you have some thoughts or experiences regarding getting more iCloud storage instead of iPhone storage, essentially replacing the majority of the latter?
