Hello r/apple,

I ordered a refurbished factory unlocked A1865 iPhone X from Apple.com and received it a few minutes ago. It is factory unlocked as listed on their store page, but when I put in my Verizon simcard, it told me to call T-Mobile to activate the phone.

I have 2 questions:

I thought the A1865 model is exclusive to Verizon Wireless and Sprint, while the A1901 model is exclusive to AT&T and T-Mobile, according to this website. Why would the A1865 model ask me to call T-mobile?
Does this mean my phone is locked to a T-mobile? I've ordered refurbished iPhones in the past and I've NEVER had this issue before. A factory unlocked iPhone just needs to be connected to wifi or cellular service for activation, but this seems different.

Any help is appreciated, thanks for reading!

Update 1 - I called Apple support and the genius said he'll contact the higher up and call me again tomorrow at 10 am to update me on the situation. This should not be happening. I am very disappointment and frustrated in their poor quality control. I bought a refurbished phone that doesn't work out of the box.

Update 2 - I did some research and I had no idea "Apple US Reseller Flex Policy" was a thing. Can anyone provide insight why this even exists? It seems to do nothing but cause inconvenience to the customer.

When you get an unlocked phone, it should accept any sim. I recently got a replacement iPhone X from apple (unlocked) and it accepts any sim. Try giving T-mobile a call or apple and see what they can do
