I am going to say something which might be controversial here, but I think the mandatory hijab law in Iran is a mistake. Even after the Islamic revolution, many many scholars around Syed Khomeini did not agree with this decision, because there are no traditions which back up the forceful implementation of hijab. It is wajib, but so is salah, Hajj, fasting in Ramadan, etc and that is not enforced via police. Also, hijab is only enforced for women as a head covering whereas other types of hijab like makeup or even men who do not cover their awrah are not enforced. I am sure Ayotallah Khomeini had reason to do this, he is on a completely different level to all of us, but I just want people to remember that even among the ulema in Qom this was a very very controversial decision. Nowadays this has been forgotten amongst the Shia. However, like many people have said, it is not enforced strictly except in the Harams in Qom and Meshad More on reddit.com
