December 25, 2021 - I think people are expecting to see earnings tank in Q1 and Q2 of 2023 (hard to see how they couldn't), which will drive firms to lay off workers in record amounts. Everything looks pretty bad in real terms. Sales and earnings are reported in nominal terms, which looks great, when you don't subtract the ~8% (or whatever that made up number is at the moment) for inflation. This is my guess as to why there's so much pessimism. The biggest problem is there's no way to beat down inflation without a recession.
