Hello,
Sorry in advance, Linux noob here. I'm coming from Windows 10, and in that OS, there's anti-virus built in and security updates. Not sure how equates to Linux?
-
How safe it Bazzite distro itself? Is the OS and updates itself safe? (I'm thinking from the perspective if some rouge dev could inject some malicious code or something?) Or is GitHub enough to vet the updates process?
-
If I follow safe computing practices, do I need to worry about malware and such?
Videos
Long time windows user and Mac OS user. Last time I dabbled in Linux it was the 90โs. Newb question; do I need to do anything to secure my machine now that I got bazzite up and running?
I'm a new Bazzite user and have learned that Bazaar is the easiest way to install things, but I'm concerned about the safety of using these apps. Many are unverified or say something like "this wrapper isn't affiliated with X brand" which makes me reluctant to use it. How can I make sure I'm downloading an authentic app?
For example, Google Chrome in Bazaar is not marked as verified and has the "not affiliated" note in the description. Is it safe to use, or should I find an alternative way to install Chrome? I know how to download the .deb from Google's site, but using CLI to install it is a whole other can of worms...
ello,
Im fairly new to using Linux and completly new to Bazzite. So far everything I want to do - --- --mainly games ofc- works perfectly.
But I was wondering about security: Is there any need/ Should I enable Secure Boot for Safety Reasons? And also: Shouldnt Games like Battlefield 6 work when enabled then?
Edit: Im using Bazzite it on my Home Desktop PC
I like that it comes with everything preinstalled for gaming, but also I have access to a full desktop when needed.
I don't see why this sort of desktop would be discouraged as a daily driver for any laptop or gaming PC?
what am i missing here?
I have been using Bazzite for 3 months and 6 days, and overall the experience has been great.
As someone completely new to Linux, Bazzite was the perfect starting point. It let me get comfortable with the Linux ecosystem without feeling overwhelmed. After these three months, I actually feel confident enough to start experimenting with other distributions.
Stability and Daily Use
From day one, Bazzite just worked. I used it for studying, video editing, and gaming.
Gaming especially exceeded my expectations. Every game I tested ran without major issues, and in many cases performance felt smoother than on Windows. The only time I had to tweak things was with non Steam games, which needed small manual adjustments.
I did run into a minor issue with ARC Raiders where frame generation was not available for me, but I do not think that was related to Bazzite specifically.
Updates were smooth and predictable. The documentation is clear and easy to follow, which made learning and troubleshooting much less intimidating as a beginner.
GNOME Experience
Choosing GNOME turned out to be a good decision for me. I think it helped me focus on learning how Linux works instead of getting lost in heavy customization.
Compared to KDE Plasma, GNOME felt simpler and less cluttered, which made the transition from Windows easier.
Sunshine and Streaming
The pre installed Sunshine setup was honestly one of the coolest parts. I was able to stream in 2K resolution to my tablet over 5 GHz Wi Fi with low latency and no noticeable quality loss.
For a few days, I even used my tablet as my main monitor. I could not figure out how to make it work as a secondary monitor, but even so, the experience was impressive.
Immutability and Distrobox
The atomic design gave me a lot of confidence. Knowing that the base system is protected made me much less afraid of breaking something while learning.
Distrobox was also very useful. I installed extra software inside containers without issues. The only thing I could not get working properly was DaVinci Resolve. The ujust script ran, but DaVinci could not edit or render videos and the player stayed stuck. I spent a few days trying to fix it but eventually gave up.
Why I Am Moving On
Even though my experience has been very positive, I am planning to move to CachyOS. Mostly out of curiosity. Bazzite made me realize that Linux can truly be my main operating system, and now I want to explore a more customizable setup and learn more about the system itself.
Bazzite was an excellent first distribution for me. It gave me stability, great gaming performance, and the confidence to go deeper into Linux.
A couple of weeks ago, I ditched Windows and switched to Bazzite. First, a quick correction: the issue with my Lenovo warranty wasnโt Lenovoโs fault after all โ I had entered the wrong serial number ๐ , so the โ6 months leftโ confusion was on me.
Now, onto Bazzite itself.
Overall, I really like Bazzite. The minimalistic design is one of my favorite things about it. The settings are clean, it doesnโt feel bloated, and it comes with a lot of features that I genuinely enjoy. I love the freedom, the apps, and how flexible the system feels compared to Windows.
That said, I do have some concerns.
One of my biggest issues is trust and transparency. I sometimes feel unsure about whatโs happening in the background โ especially when it comes to personal data. For example, I keep asking myself: If I enter my bank details, where does that data go? How is it handled? This uncertainty makes me a bit uncomfortable.
Gaming is another mixed experience. While many games run well, some titles donโt work without Proton, and even then, not everything runs perfectly. This is a downside for me, because if Linux could run all Windows games flawlessly, Iโd probably stick with it without hesitation.
Iโve also had issues with the virtual keyboard, which can be frustrating at times and breaks the smooth experience the OS is aiming for.
In conclusion, I really appreciate Bazzite for its minimalism, freedom, and overall design. However, between game compatibility issues, concerns about data security, and small usability problems like the virtual keyboard, it still doesnโt feel fully sufficient for my needs โ at least not yet. Iโm not sure if Iโm missing something or if these are just current limitations, but Bazzite is very close to being something Iโd stay with long-term.
Ps: I'm chilling with emos until I got I bought som games ๐ฎ ๐ Underground 2 is running flawlessly
