r/ClaudeAI on Reddit: Use Claude 3 Opus from the API to prevent paying a flat $20/month for it

I highly recommend using Claude 3 Opus from the API, especially if you just want to try it out. It’s not free but the API doesn’t require an upfront flat fee and doesn’t have rate limits etc!

There’s some options for desktop like TypingMind.

For iOS I wanted to suggest my app called Pal Chat that lets you use your own API Key to chat with Claude, and it’s completely free to download: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pal-ai-chat-client/id6447545085

(The app also has no backend and takes absolutely no usage data. You can verify this by going to the app privacy report in iOS settings!)

September 10, 2024 -

Ive searched this subreddit for answers and I’ve also asked Google, Copilot, and free Claude. I’m sure the answers are out there, so please forgive me that I can’t find them.

Hence I ask for your help. What’s the easiest way for a programming noob to use the Claude API? All I want initially is to ask questions via the API, similar to the subscription version. I want to use the API vs subscription because maybe it’ll be cheaper and I also just want experience with it.

I signed up for an account and have purchased API tokens. I have an API key. But I’m struggling finding concise directions on how to use it.

I’m familiar with the $20/month subscription and want to become familiar with the API as well.

Firstly I apologize if my question seems... silly. However... Who knows, maybe someone will have a solution or a good suggestion.
Recently, I started interacting with Claude and I'm simply loving it! Claude's creative writing is awesome! I would love to have access to the API. However, every time I try to add funds, it continues to ask me for data about my "organization" — which I have none. That's when I searched on the Anthropic website and discovered that the "API is not intended for individual use". Is that it? Noooo! I don't want to accept this cruel sentence.

Do you all use the API under a organization/company? And we, poor individuals, are doomed to the OpenAI API only? 😭

People are not giving any real arguments for why is it better to use API instead of Web. I was burning over 400$ a month in API, and i use WEB as much as i can because if i worked on large files like 700-1000 lines of code, i would burn 20$ of api in few hours. What kind of argument is that you pay what you use. Claude WEB allows you not care about size of your files, 20$ for claude is a great deal. If you know how to use Claude web, then you wont hit limits as much. Ill give you 2 gamechanging tips. If you want to use API, buy 10$ subscription for github copilot, install cline in VSC, set cline to suck AI from VSC extension, in this case Copilot, and use sonnet 3.5 for flat 10$. It will sometimes show you rate limit exceeded, but when it does, just wait a bit and try again. in the lat few days ive used it so much i would pay 45$ for api itself if i used it directly, but instead i only paid 10$ (Before i knew that trick i was burning 400$ a month). You can try this solution via free version of copilot (monthly limits). Second tip for web usage. Basically claude's limits work in 5h spans. And it counts from the first message you write. So lets say you write your first message at 5pm, this means new limit will be aavailable at 10pm, no matter if you use whole limit or not. So the trick is to force it to reset on hours that we want. Right now im messaging it via iphone automations at 7:01 am, to force it to reset my limit at 12pm. If you know that you mostly work in claude at 5-7 pm, then just message it "hi" at 1pm this way you can use all your limit from 5-6pm, it will reset on 6pm, and you have fresh batch of limit at 6:01, voi la.

Not getting off is a big one! Most months, I spend far less than $20/month, because I spread my usage across several companies. I usually spend around $5 a month on claude api and $10 a month on chatgpt. In the occasional months in which I'm writing papers my cost goes up to 20-25 across the engines.

r/ClaudeAI on Reddit: Do I need to pay for both Claude and Anthropic to use the API key?
October 30, 2024 -

I just paid for the Pro version of Claude. Downloaded Cursor and when I went to add the 'API key', it seems like I also need to pay for Anthropic?

I am a little confused. First time doing the Cursor IDE setup. I am a Rider dev.

I want to be able to use Cursor without any limitations. Not bragging but money is not a concern. I make enough as a Software Consultant to afford those memberships.

Also, I heard about bolt.new or something along those lines? I checked it out but it seems towards opinionated out-of-the-box frontend applications.

Any advice?

Thanks!!!

Hey, I know it might be a strange question, but is there a way to use Claude 3 completely free? I mean some site that provides free (unlimited) access, or some sort of free API key? I’ve tried LmsysChat, but it doesn’t work for me anymore.

r/ClaudeAI on Reddit: Is Claude (free) better than ChatGPT (free) at coding & web design (html, js, python, etc)?

Recently started using Claude, and I like it! The interface and bg color feels comforting and minimalistic. There are awkward restrictions like max length output and number of messages per a few hours, but I like this chatgpt competitor.

I asked it to modify my server code and build a dashboard frontend page, and it did pretty well. I really like the color choice. The code is pretty clean, and it used techniques I wasn't aware before. I actually asked chatgpt to explain certain aspects of the code.

But in general, is claude 3 sonnet better than chatgpt3.5 at creating, designing, and modifying code/apps?

How is Claude with a subscription vs. free? : r/ClaudeAI
May 31, 2024 - IMHO if you’re a developer and are willing to spend money, just use the API. There’s plenty of free tools that leverage it (eg. LibreChat and Pal on iOS) and the usage limits won’t slow you down. The price is comparable with medium usage. With heavy usage, the subscription is probably still cheaper. ... Sometimes it’s like yes! And sometimes it’s no! ... I started using Claude 3.5 Sonnet today via the web interface and I had it create three different apps in three languages and wire them all up running in kubernetes.

There's been some discussion about the limits on Claude, even with the Pro plan, and one of the solutions (I thought) was to just use the API. However, according to their TOS that's not actually allowed, and it's for business purposes only. I use Sonnet 3.5 for programming, which is my business, but I also often use it just for everyday tasks to make my life easier. According to the TOS it looks like that's not allowed via the API though. Does anyone have any experience with this?

There are so many people here complaining about the chat. Just use the API and add a persona character to it and don't use Opus use Sonnet, it works better for getting around silly restrictions and honestly Sonnet probably writes even better (if that's your goal). With adding a persona to the system message in API you can pretty much do whatever you want.

I just wanted to post this because 1. sonnet is fine. 2. people so negative here like the world granted you this amazing technology that is 100% changing the world for the better (until skynet) and ya'll freaking out about $20. You spend that on a fucking latte every other day. I spend hundreds on API costs through gpt-4 until recently, and I have no no regrets it's completely changed my life, and the world, for the better.

Stop using it like a tool, and start using it like a collaborator.

Also, if you do use claude.ai chat, just start a new chat window. Those long ass conversations each message counts against your token limit. You can talk to this thing all day practically just start a new chat.

r/Anthropic on Reddit: Is Claude API cheaper than chat for heavy usage? Need project/knowledge base management
August 26, 2024 -

I'm currently using Claude 3.5 Sonnet through the chat interface with a limit of 45 messages per 5 hours. My project is consuming over 50% of the available tokens (according to information from UI project information). I have two main questions:

  1. Is using the Claude API potentially cheaper for this level of usage compared to the chat interface? And if there is option like adding files with information about project

  2. Are there any tools or services that are wrapper over API that offerspecifically the ability to maintain a knowledge base of files for my project?

If anyone has experience with similar usage patterns or knows of suitable project management tools for use with Claude, I'd appreciate your insights.

r/ClaudeAI on Reddit: Easiest way to use Claude API to avoid daily limits
April 13, 2024 -

I switched from GPT-4 to now mostly using Claude 3, but the daily message limits are annoying. Also, I really like the ChatGPT interface better. Claude is missing a features like a button to STOP when it’s streaming a long response that is bad.

I use this project to get my own front-end for Claude 3. It uses the API so I have no daily limit to messages, and I get to use a chat interface that has all the features ChatGPT has. Even if you’re not very technical, it’s easy to set up. https://github.com/allyourbot/hostedgpt

It supports both GPT-4 and Claude 3 so it lets you do really cool things like you’re having a conversation with one of them and you don’t like it’s response, you click the “re-generate” button and you can switch assistants mid-conversation. This animated gif demonstrates. The other day I asked it a technical question and switched assistants and finally got the right answer! https://p425.p0.n0.cdn.zight.com/items/ApuPWXb6/c413f8dc-519f-4f5f-b250-45a7688b99d1.gif

It’s also really nice to have access to both GPT-4 and Claude 3 without committing to $20 per month to either. I just get charged for what I use. For example, OpenAI released a new version of the GPT-4 model last week I’ve been going back to it to see how much they improved it. (I don’t have a well-formed opinion yet).

Claude removed free access to Claude 3.5 Sonnet on the website. If you'd still like to use it without having to pay a flat $20/month, I highly recommend using Claude 3.5 Sonnet through the API - you won't have rate limits, and with its cheaper cost you'll likely be spending less than a subscription to Claude Pro!

I have a free native iOS app that supports chatting to Claude 3.5 Sonnet (and all other LLMs) using your own API Key which you could use: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pal-chat-ai-chat-client/id6447545085?platform=iphone

r/ClaudeAI on Reddit: API vs Subscription?
March 10, 2024 -

Hi all, I was using the Claude Opus API and this is kinda my first time using an API for an AI model. I was wondering if there are any tips or tricks when using an API to save on money. atm I have $5.00 to use on credit, and I noticed that if I write a prompt, and get an output, I can add that output to my chat or I can just continue and disregard whatever the model wrote and start anew. Is there any benefit to adding the old chats to the list for context, or does it become wayy to costly if I always do that?

Also what would be the most efficient way to use the API for personal use? Or should I just get a general subscription plan, which one would be better in the longrun do you think? Is there a fundamental difference between the API or subscription.

Sonnet costs for the input Input: $3 / per million tokens and Output: $15 / per million tokens, and Opus costs Input: $15 / million tokens and Output: $75 / million tokens. as you can see, Opus is quite a bit more costly through the API than just a subscription. instead through the subscription you can get 100 messages per 8 hours for an entire month. assuming your using the subscription to its fullest, it would probably be worth it over the API. it especially would be if you were using heavy context lengths, since that can add up quickly through the API. although if its only for light now and then usage, the API could be more savings in the long run. so it's up to you, but i'd say if you use a lot of context and or use it frequently then the subscription, but if its only for light stuff then the API. but of course its your call. as for the "fundamental differences", there aren't much. the models behave the same, the only differences you can maybe say is that you can edit the system prompt through the API and edit the models responses, but that's it. and those aren't things you really need to do all that often, if at all. and of course adding the models responses to the API would end up costing more, but it's a sacrifice you kind of have to do considering what you usually use these language models for. hope this helped!

If you just want to chat with Claude, definitely spring for the subscription. I blew through the $5 API credit in less than a day. The API is super expensive, but it is meant to be used to power customer-facing apps.

r/ClaudeAI on Reddit: Claude AI vs API Usage Costs
April 11, 2025 -

I’ve been using Claude AI for the past couple of weeks mainly for coding and finding it better by far than chatGPT

One annoying thing was the constant running out of usage, and today I noticed you can up to higher tiers which I did.

However as my work is getting more complex using the web interface just isn’t practically and more and need to move to using it within vscode, which I’ve just been too lazy to do.

I went to do that and realised you can’t used your ClaudeAI account and need the API account instead which is annoying.

So my question is what’s usage costs like when comparing them?

Are you using an MCP server to let you work directly in your local directory, or are you still just using the web app or desktop app in isolation? If you're not using an MCP server, I would set one of those up and try it first before getting into a real IDE. Check out the filesystem MCP or DesktopCommander MCP. You install them simply by editing a config file.

Have been a dev for more than a decade and moved away from it until I recently gave a go at vscode x cline. Using open router (meaning a 5% surcharge) on different models, the cost through the API is definitely high. Right now I can go through 20$ a day easy and I am refraining because of the cost. If you know what you are doing and optimise your prompt to only design decisions and specific small scale debugging needs, then you can get out of it with a lot less investment. Other models are pretty interesting too, Gemini 2.5 being free is a must try, it definitely does not compare to Claude for coding, but it's free, if you are cost conscious this is a strong alternative with a lot of human intervention (so slower) There are models better than Gemini which are still cheaper than Claude but then you would have to test them to see what their limits are and when to use them for the best savings. At the end of the day you are going to balance cost vs speed. If what you are working on is not valuable or has a low ROI and your own hourly cost is low (like personal per project) then you should optimise your costs. If you are building something meant to, or already making money, and you are investing in it, Claude expensive cost is still a win given how fast it will get you to your goal.
