I'm a junior in high school and really want to get into computer science, but everywhere I look I see people saying "computer science is the new phycology degree" and that the work force is "over saturated" I love coding and I really want to become a software developer but I'm worried I won't be able to get a job and that it will be a huge waste of time. Is this just people saying things just because or is it true that computer science degrees are becoming useless?
Hello guys, i am kinda do not know what to study. CS is kinda fimiliar to me with programming languages etc. but I feel like investing in CS makes me worry a lot. CS field is so crowded and I am not sure if i will survive there. I am from asean country and having plan to immigrate to South Korea or Japan or Australia in the nearly future. What do you think about job market there? Or should I pursue other engineering degree instead of pure CS? Please help me.

So I'm looking into degrees since I'll be starting college (hopefully) in the coming months. I really like computer science and, more specifically, cybersecurity. I don't know if it's just articles I've seen or people online freaking out about it, but is the job market for these degrees really bad? Too many workers with little to no experience and AI pushing out entry-level stuff is what I've heard. No place for a foothold. Obviously we can't see into the future, but do you guys think it's still worth it to pursue this sector or should I set my sights on something else?
EDIT: I just got off work so sorry I haven’t responded much, this got more replies than I counted on! Thanks everyone for the feedback and advice as well as testimonials. I appreciate it all!
Is CS still a good major or will it still be a good major in the near future? If not, what are good alternative considerations?
Been hearing a lot of different things. Some saying AI is gonna take over the jobs of all engineers and then I also hear its gonna be a long time before that ever happens. So which one is it? Im 22 years old and lost in what i want to do major in. Currently a business admin major with around 30 credits (3.91 total gpa) left to graduate but i feel like i will struggle to find a job after college.
I plan on studying either cybersecurity or software engineering but considering the recent developments in AI and the horror stories I hear about CS majors being homeless, I’m wondering if I should study this or go into a trade.
Hello, I want to ask if CS still worth to pursue. I really enjoy coding. But most people say CS is cooked. My interest is more in Data Science and ML field. I still love software development but it is too much saturated. If I keep focus on Data instead of oversaturated field, is it still possible for me to have job at least. I am not aiming too much. I also have goal to keep studying for graduate degrees. What do you think?
Like title said, why do so many students still want to study Computer Science in 2025, despite the apparent saturation the in job market?
As someone who has been closely observing the job market over the past two years. It's 2025, and despite the escalating lay-offs in tech companies and an overabundance of fresh computer science graduates struggling to secure a job, an increasing number of students continue to enroll in computer science programs. Why is this the case?
I’m currently a high school senior and I have no idea what I’m interested in, so I just want to earn high salary. I think math and physics are so abstract but I can still get a good grade if I work hard. The AI seems to be making programmers earn less in the future, should I still major in computer science? Thx in advanced
I want to major in computer science but all I have seen are discouraging social media posts. Computers are my thing from hardware to software. I have about a year of IT experience from working at my high school which I think could help in finding a job. Is there another major I should be focusing on? I do not really know what specific career I would take on within the computer science field. I was thinking maybe cybersecurity or cloud computing. Would that be taken over by AI. I have many questions all answers are welcome. Thank you for any insight.
right now I am choosing my major in college and i don't have any idea where to go. i was really enthusiastic about cs and i build a couple of projects with JavaScript and react but right now with the whole ai trend and the current job market state I don't know if it really worth it picking cs because I am worried to get layed off one day or struggle to find an internship or an entry level job. please guide me
I’m currently in high school and have had a passion for a computer science career since I was 10. This upcoming school year I will be taking computer science classes and will continue to do so for the rest of high school. However I am becoming hesitant as to whether a computer science career is actually worth it due to advancements in AI and the computer science job market being limited. Is it worth it to go into computer science? Also would it be worth it to get a masters or just a bachelors when I eventually go to college? I love computers and electronics and would want to be in computer science but I also want to make enough money to be more than comfortable
I’m currently in my 3rd year of college with 2 years left to finish my Computer Science degree. I’m transferring to Virginia Tech soon, and since it’s an expensive school, I want to make sure I’m pursuing something that’ll actually get me a stable job after graduation. I don’t even know if VT is considered a target school for tech anymore, which just adds to the uncertainty.
Here’s my issue. I genuinely enjoy computer science and coding, but I keep seeing mixed opinions online. Some people say CS is a dead degree and that AI will replace software engineers. Others (and even ChatGPT itself) say the field is changing, not dying.
But then I see all these massive tech layoffs and how good AI has already gotten. It can even write its own code now. That makes me wonder if AI keeps improving this fast, will there even be a real future for software engineers?
At the same time, I still see tons of students confidently pursuing CS like nothing’s wrong, which just makes me even more confused.
I’d really appreciate a genuine, professional opinion. Is it still worth it to pursue Computer Science for a stable job? Will AI actually replace software engineers, or just change what they do? Is CS really “dead,” or is that just an overreaction to current trends?
I’m not trying to stir debate. I just need real guidance before committing to a degree that’ll cost a lot.
Computer science use to be like the top degree to go into with technology booming like it is. Right now comp sci grads seem to be struggling to find jobs but it is more due to the economic situation rather than ai but when/ if the economy starts “booming” again will computer science grads still be in demand ? What do you guys think?
I’ve been interested in tech since I was a kid even coded a few games but I’m not sure if this degree is really promising anymore and I’m thinking of switching my major, anyone else in here in school for cs? Or graduated?
Despite the layoffs and extreme competition, people still choose to go for the tech field route. I mean the pay and job opportunities is one thing but what other thing is about tech that people get drawn into. Is the ability to work remotely? Are there not any other career paths to look for good pay and job security? Is healthcare slowly dying or something because during the pandemic, so many healthcare professionals switched their paths to tech.
