CS professor here. If CS is your passion, you truly love the field and if you're really good at it, go for it. Especially if you have a core CS topic you want to specialize in! If it's not your passion, or you just have meek feelings for it, thinking you'll make alot of money, it's probably not your best option. The market is bad, especially for entry levels. It's not too horrible for senior and above, but still not ideal. If you're worried about AI taking over, there's still a ways to go for that. If you're good at what you do, AI is just a faster Google search/stack overflow, but you need to know what you're doing before using it. Answer from Otherwise-Mirror-738 on reddit.com

So I'm looking into degrees since I'll be starting college (hopefully) in the coming months. I really like computer science and, more specifically, cybersecurity. I don't know if it's just articles I've seen or people online freaking out about it, but is the job market for these degrees really bad? Too many workers with little to no experience and AI pushing out entry-level stuff is what I've heard. No place for a foothold. Obviously we can't see into the future, but do you guys think it's still worth it to pursue this sector or should I set my sights on something else?

EDIT: I just got off work so sorry I haven’t responded much, this got more replies than I counted on! Thanks everyone for the feedback and advice as well as testimonials. I appreciate it all!

I plan on studying either cybersecurity or software engineering but considering the recent developments in AI and the horror stories I hear about CS majors being homeless, I’m wondering if I should study this or go into a trade.

Like title said, why do so many students still want to study Computer Science in 2025, despite the apparent saturation the in job market?

As someone who has been closely observing the job market over the past two years. It's 2025, and despite the escalating lay-offs in tech companies and an overabundance of fresh computer science graduates struggling to secure a job, an increasing number of students continue to enroll in computer science programs. Why is this the case?

I want to major in computer science but all I have seen are discouraging social media posts. Computers are my thing from hardware to software. I have about a year of IT experience from working at my high school which I think could help in finding a job. Is there another major I should be focusing on? I do not really know what specific career I would take on within the computer science field. I was thinking maybe cybersecurity or cloud computing. Would that be taken over by AI. I have many questions all answers are welcome. Thank you for any insight.

June 18, 2023 - STEM is almost always worth it, especially applied science stuff, like AppliedPhysics/Engineering/CS. CS is especially useful, everywhere I look, CS is always needed, even in my own major (ME) I still NEED to know coding.

You shouldn't try to pick a degree based on min maxing your career and earnings, if you're good with computers, you enjoy it, then do it. You'll find a job. ... Tbh it’s the same for a lot of fields as many are saying, a lot of the trades ...

r/cscareers on Reddit: Is going into Computer Science in a couple of years worth it?
June 4, 2025 -

I’m currently in high school and have had a passion for a computer science career since I was 10. This upcoming school year I will be taking computer science classes and will continue to do so for the rest of high school. However I am becoming hesitant as to whether a computer science career is actually worth it due to advancements in AI and the computer science job market being limited. Is it worth it to go into computer science? Also would it be worth it to get a masters or just a bachelors when I eventually go to college? I love computers and electronics and would want to be in computer science but I also want to make enough money to be more than comfortable

r/ECE on Reddit: Is Computer Science still worth it in 2025? I’m genuinely confused about the future of this field.
October 18, 2025 -

I’m currently in my 3rd year of college with 2 years left to finish my Computer Science degree. I’m transferring to Virginia Tech soon, and since it’s an expensive school, I want to make sure I’m pursuing something that’ll actually get me a stable job after graduation. I don’t even know if VT is considered a target school for tech anymore, which just adds to the uncertainty.

Here’s my issue. I genuinely enjoy computer science and coding, but I keep seeing mixed opinions online. Some people say CS is a dead degree and that AI will replace software engineers. Others (and even ChatGPT itself) say the field is changing, not dying.

But then I see all these massive tech layoffs and how good AI has already gotten. It can even write its own code now. That makes me wonder if AI keeps improving this fast, will there even be a real future for software engineers?

At the same time, I still see tons of students confidently pursuing CS like nothing’s wrong, which just makes me even more confused.

I’d really appreciate a genuine, professional opinion. Is it still worth it to pursue Computer Science for a stable job? Will AI actually replace software engineers, or just change what they do? Is CS really “dead,” or is that just an overreaction to current trends?

I’m not trying to stir debate. I just need real guidance before committing to a degree that’ll cost a lot.

August 14, 2024 - STEM majors in general are good for all sorts of jobs and even if you can't actually work in Tech its better than most degrees. This is the answer tho it is not worth it if its just for the money it is worth it if you enjoy it. There are only a handful of good degrees engineering, accounting, and CS was the other but that one is questionable now.

Despite the layoffs and extreme competition, people still choose to go for the tech field route. I mean the pay and job opportunities is one thing but what other thing is about tech that people get drawn into. Is the ability to work remotely? Are there not any other career paths to look for good pay and job security? Is healthcare slowly dying or something because during the pandemic, so many healthcare professionals switched their paths to tech.
