Back last fall (October 1, 2022), my husbands parents hired a PI to try and dig up information about my husband and myself.
Well, I logged into an old email from forever ago that I rarely go into (maybe once a year) and saw that there was an email from FLHSMV stating ::
“Dear ((my name)):
A Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles account associated with this email address was accessed today at 7:26 PM EST for ((my name)). If you believe someone may have accessed this information without authorization, please notify us immediately at [email protected] and provide a phone number for our team to reach you. Please note, an account-holder may add or change their account email address at any time at GoRenew.com.”
I’m wondering if it’s even legal for someone to access my driving information/records without my consent. If it isn’t, what legal action can I take?

It is illegal for someone to falsely represent themselves as someone else to get access to confidential government records. It is illegal for someone to “hack” into someone else’s account or login as them without their authorization. What can you do about it? You can report this activity to the FLHSMV as the email states. You can report it to law enforcement. That’s about all you can do. What will they do about it? Almost certainly nothing. Especially for a one time incident that occurred 7 months ago where you have no evidence of who did it.

I would go update your email address and change any passwords you have on the DMV site, and on any other site that you have that shares that password. If you are 100% sure that it was not you who accessed the record or logged into the system, send the DMV an email that the PI (include their name, if known) accessed the system pretending to be you. Since it has been so long, it is unlikely that they will be able to document and do anything about it, but letting them know that this PI is doing that may help them establish a pattern of behavior. Your relationships are your business, but had my MIL did that, I’d revoke the grandchildren privileges…
