Memory foam vs. gel memory foam: Side by side comparison
August 27, 2020 - Memory foam mattresses mold to a person’s body. They are a good option for supporting the spine and reducing lower back pain. However, memory foam also traps heat and can cause night sweats.

Can tempur pedic foam mattress toppers make back pain worse?
Absolutely, any topper which is either too soft and/or thick can allow you to hammock which unnaturally arches your spinal column resulting in back pain. Sleeping in the prone position (on your stomach) puts the most strain on your back and the supporting muscles. TP foam allows you to sink into it which can avoid pressure point pain, but if your spinal alignment is compromised back pain is the result. To avoid the problem would require a firmer and/or thinner comfort layer of the Tempur material. More on reddit.com

What is the best mattress type for back pain?
There’s no one best mattress type for back pain, but generally mattresses that provide a combination of pressure relief and support are ideal. This makes hybrids and latex hybrids good, since these beds tend to offer a close conforming comfort layer that relieves pressure, while at the same time having a study coil support core underneath. I would avoid soft all-foam beds or overly firm innerspring beds.

Is a firm or soft mattress better for back pain?
This really depends on you. Since back pain relief is all about proper support and spinal alignment, your sleeping position and weight will determine whether a firm or soft mattress is right for you. As a general rule of thumb, the heavier you are, the firmer a mattress you need. Back and stomach sleepers also tend to prefer firm mattresses, whereas side sleepers like something a little more plush. Refer to the “Sleep Ratings” section in the above product cards to see whether a bed fits your needs.

Gel Memory Foam vs. Latex: What's the Difference? - eachnight
November 23, 2025 - If you’re a side sleeper, you suffer from sore joints, or you have skeletal pain, a gel memory foam mattress could be better for you than latex. Side sleepers have concentrated pressure points on their hips and shoulders because they place all their weight on one side. The best mattress for side sleepers has a soft, medium-soft, or medium feel, which relieves pain and pressure. Because side sleepers sink into the mattress’s materials more than a back sleeper, their body heat can get trapped in the bed and build up.
