The Types of Cottons You Should Know
December 23, 2024 - Like Sea Island Cotton, Giza needs to be grown near water, which for Giza tends to be the Nile River. The Nile Delta, to be exact. The Delta is nutrient-rich and has a high humidity, which is a great boon to cotton production. Giza is also renowned for its staple length, but it is slightly thicker and shorter than Suvin.

Long stable. Which is what Supima is, but Supima is also a brand that gives you a no bullshit guarantee. The problem with all of this is that words are cheap and get tossed around loosely, so you don't know exactly what they're selling unless the brand is reliable. They grow junk in Egypt too, and just because it says Egyptian, you don't know with certainty if it's true or just marketing. I don't think the global word police are all that focused. Organic just means they don't spray it with pesticides, and they probably pay someone for a paper of certification. Bottom line is, you can't buy high quality for bargain basement prices, but the inverse is possible and there are people/companies who specialize in that. They're all over amazon and walmart and nobody is policing them. Forget trying to beat the word salad and buy a brand you can trust.

Ultimately, you need to decide on your sheet budget. If you want the best, you'll be shelling out a couple grand to get a premium extra-long staple cotton set. Then you're talking along the lines of Sferra or Frette. If budget is an issue, there are some pretty high quality companies that make a nice percale sheet. They won't last forever, and they won't feel like the creme de la creme. But they'll feel light, airy, and crisp. Good for hot sleepers, who need bedding that breathes. Thomas Lee comes to mind, if you only want white or cream. For brands you can pick up on Amazon with a lot more color options, I'd say California Design Den and Coyuchi's percales are worth looking at. I'm a fan of The Company Store's percale as well - it's pretty soft and very light and probably won't last more than a few years, but that lightness is just what I'm looking for, as I sleep ridiculously hot. I have experience with Quince's linen, not their percale, but I love their linen, especially at their prices, so I'd consider their percale as well if I were going to buy more right now. And LL Bean has a great reputation with their pima cotton percale, but I've been hearing there's been a quality drop off? Good luck figuring out what fits your needs. And your budget.

January 24, 2023 - They're just a huge leap in difference quality-wise when you compare them side-by-side with the Sferra Giza 45s (and even the 'lesser' quality Sferra ELS offerings). I think, in the end, it comes down to the Supima cotton being the best American cotton you can get (in terms of softness/staple) --- but it's not the best cotton you can get in the entire world...

Why are Egyptian Giza & Pima Cotton Sheets So Special? - InnStyle- Hospitality Products at Wholesale Prices
January 20, 2020 - Giza accounts for about 20 percent of the ELS cotton on the market. There’s also Pima cotton, another ELS variety that’s produced in the United States. (It gets its name from the Pima Indians, who helped raise the cotton on experimental farms in the early part of the 20th century). Egypt produces less cotton than a lot of the countries making cotton for sheets, towels and other items.
