Google literally has rebranded their mobile wallet a million times. This is just their most recent rebranding in the US after deciding to split their p2p payment app and wallet into two wallets. Google decided to shutter their p2p payments now though. You should still receive rewards like normal. Google wallet just passes transaction info to your actual account but uses a digital card number to present to merchants. It’s very similar to other implementations like Samsung Pay or Apple Pay. Cards with a mobile wallet category, you would earn the boosted percentage (up to a limit if applicable) on any purchase when paying with your mobile wallet in store at a POS that takes contactless payments. It’s possible to also earn the boosted percentage on some apps if they take the tokenized card number (Apple pay is much more reliable in this regard). This is likely not exactly what you're looking for, but I'm going to throw it out there anyways. If you have/get a Garmin smartwatch, they have Garmin Pay. Load up your supported credit card and it works just like any other NFC tap to pay provider. I read over their privacy policy and was pretty satisfied that it appears they're not selling my information or anything, and Garmin has a better privacy reputation than Google/ Microsoft/ Samsung etc. I tried it for the first time last week and everything went smoothly. Probably not what you had in mind, but if by chance you were considering a watch, it's something to consider to get another step away from Google. More on reddit.com

2 things: Firstly, I will never understand why somebody connect their bank account with google/apple wallet in order to give the royal ad company the best overview of all ur payments & consumer behavior for free. Just use a credit card or for or disposable credit card accounts for online activities via visa Secondly, I know thats the de-google sub but omg, pleease start using the google default phone dialer again. It makes me kinda crazy seeing replacment apps from that truecaller company by quick checking that they send data packages like crazy with like 15 trackers per app by a close aurora/exodus look. Maybe Google is bar far not the most private, but they are at least secure. More on reddit.com

Simply put, my question is will I not receive cashback if I use Google Wallet to pay at a register?
I've heard a lot of different things about this topic, and I just want to make sure I understand it correctly.
Google Pay will be discontinued, and is switching to Google Wallet. What exactly does this mean?
My understanding is that Google Wallet is merely a way to store credit cards on a phone, and pay using the phone. But, other than using a phone to pay, it is the same (as far as points and fees go), as paying with a traditional credit card. Is this correct?
I've heard of some credit cards (such as Kroger) that give 5% on "mobile wallet", so does that just mean you'll get 5% anywhere that allows Google Wallet payments with that card, even if it isn't a grocery store? Furthermore, some cards have a rotating category of "mobile wallet", so would this be a similar concept?
I also read that if Google Pay is used, cashback will not get applied towards whichever credit card was used, since the method was Google Pay. Google Pay has a cash back program of their own, but I would not be interested in participating in this. To avoid all of that, would it be best to use Google Wallet and avoid Google Pay?
Thanks, and apologies if I'm all over the place with this question. I just want to make sure I understand it, as I have read mixed things regarding fees, cashback, etc. I have my cards loaded on Google Wallet and ready to use, but just feel hesitant to use them until I understand this more.

What you need to know is that for most purposes, paying with Google Wallet is just like paying with the actual card. It's registered just as if you're paying with the CC itself. The Kroger cards or the US Bank Altitude Reserve are examples of cards that reward you for paying with Google Wallet. I've only been using Google Wallet, so I'm not sure what the difference to the Google Pay app is.
