r/geography on Reddit: Serious question about the US territory of Guam and Northern Mariana Islands
December 23, 2023 -

Can someone explain how this is organized. My understanding is that Guam is a US territory, and I think I get what that means. Now I'm reading that Guam is part of the Northern Mariana Islands which is something other than a US territory, like a commonwealth or something.

So is the Northern Mariana Islands part of the US territory of Guam, or is Guam a us territory which is part of a larger group the rest of which is not an organized US territory?

Or am I missing something altogether?

Related, does a US citizen need a passport to travel to either Guam or Saipan?
