I am getting rid of MAX in the new year. I have had it since 2020 but gradually began to notice I was using the service less and less since the merger with Discovery Plus and the glut of trash reality TV which now litters the site. The TCM hub on MAX has the same few hundred movies with no curation. It also has a terrible user interface now considering it used to be so effective when it was HBOMAX. The only reason I kept the service this long is because I care for several of the HBO shows but I observed I almost never get on the service anymore. I doubt I'll miss it, but if I ever get in the mood to watch Larry Sanders or Curb or Succession again, it's a simple matter to rejoin it. Answer from Scorpio_Rising11 on reddit.com

November 25, 2024 -

Speak up, guys!

Max has a BlackFriday promotion, but I wanted to know if it's still worth subscribing to?

In the sense of content, quality and platform, are they really quality?

Thank you in advance!

July 16, 2025 -

Not long ago a bunch of shows were taken off of HBO/MAX. Some/most were moved to Discovery+. I guess to get more money out of people.

I keep looking for good movies and something somewhat recent and not Jason Bourne, Harry Potter, etc. but I don't see much.

Are there any good series/movies coming to HBO?

My year subscription runs out in a couple of months and the shows I watch most on it are old shows like The Big Bang Theory and Friends which isn't really worth the money as much as I enjoy them.

Not trying to rag on it but wondering if I'm missing stuff since most streaming apps make it tough to search through all of their movies/shows.

I’m leaning toward subscribing to Max, but am trying to decide between the standard or premium subscription. Is the 4K and Dolby Atmos worth getting premium? I am using an APPLE TV 4K with Sony 4K TV with Sonos surround system.

My favorite show all time is game of thrones and I wanna do a rewatch. I personally watch tv on my monitor and I recently upgraded to a 1440p/2k monitor. Do you think there would be a noticeable difference in quality if I were to upgrade to premium and watch it in 2k?

r/HBOMAX on Reddit: Standard Plan vs Premium Plan, worth the upgrade?
February 21, 2025 -

I have a lifetime 50% discount with a Standard Plan (2 screens, 30 downloads, HD/Dolby 5.1 and SDR) and HBOMAX just offered me the chance to upgrade to the Premium Plan (4 screens, 100 download, 4K UHD/Dolby Atmos and HDR) for a 20% price bump.

Is it worth it?

I have a 4K TV and I do most of my TV watching g with my AirPods Pro2 with Spatial Audio (which I believe supports Dolby Atmos?).

Will I notice the difference??

I believe most of my other streaming services are also the basic packages, so likely not 4K or Atmos, but I get such an insanely good deal with HBO it seems like it would be worth the upgrade.

For the record I'm perfectly happy with the Audio and Video quality, probably because I don't know any better, but we're talking about the price of a cup of coffee at the current rates.

Don't get me wrong MAX (will be calling all HBO content MAX) has great, great shows. I've have also seen what I view as not so much their strong content.

The Staircase

The Undoing

Love & Death

Full Circle

The White Lotus

I would have added Raised by Wolves but different genre as the above. Where are shows like The Sopranos, True Blood, The Wire or Deadwood? It seems as MAX are leaning heavily towards these crime/thriller genre as there is nothing wrong in the genre, but are lacking quality.

I guess were getting some more Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Superheroes, Abrams type shows in the future which will be a change of pace. Not that I only enjoy these type of series as I would like a Sherlock type series.

I didn't intend this post to bash MAX in anyway, please don't treat it as such. Its just my take on MAX as of now.

Is it worth getting MAX? : r/HBOMAX
August 23, 2023 - It’s worth it to binge Band of Brothers, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Wire, and The Sopranos. Beyond that I’d only sub if there’s a slew of movies you want. The Discovery content is bad. Their new shows are lacking; Apple TV is fast becoming the only streaming service willing to spend real money for prestige tv. I’d recommend Apple TV + over Max. But definitely try a few months of Max for classic HBO stuff if you haven’t seen it.

I was one of the people who got Max on launch day. I remember being so excited to watch HBO shows, Cartoon Network cartoons, and old Sesame Street episodes. Well, it's been 4 years since it launched, and a lot has changed, from shows being taken off the service, to changes in leadership, to merging with Discovery, to rebranding to just Max. After everything the service has gone through, is it worth getting in 2024?

I've been a subscriber to HBO Max since its inception & I've also been independently subscribing to Discovery + for well over a year. HBO Max used to offer a new "theater movie" every single month & tons of original programming and movies. It was great! 5 stars. BUT then Discovery bought out HBO Max, got rid of almost all the good content, cut everything down to bare bones, and then raised the prices by 25% +. HBO Max now just "MAX" gets a 1/4 a star, in my opinion. GREED ruined HBO Max! Max took out all the good content & then substituted it with around a 1/4 of the stuff that's on Discovery +. HBO Max just isn't worth the $$$ anymore. No way! Especially since they raised the prices! Bye-bye Max! I enjoy true crime & science (astronomy) shows. I think Discovery+ is great and it deserves a far better rating than Max! Max 1 star. Discovery + 5 stars. Shame on Discovery for absolutely ruining one of the best streaming platforms. What are your viewing experiences with Max?

My ingenious plan (🙄) is to say adios to the Disney+/Hulu/ Max bundle, primarily because Max's 4K content isn't available on that plan. ( A fact that they are really shady about mentioning before you sign up....🧐) But, now I'm not so sure. So I ask you, bored readers, is Max's top tier worth it ? Any glitches streaming on a Google TV ? Is the Dolby Vision/ Atmos considerably better than the 1080p/ 5.1 level ? Sigh Such first world problems. Any and all opinions are welcomed. Point me down the golden road to videophile bliss, or save me from the primrose path of questionable streaming services that count on fools like me to grab their wallets and raise them up high, blinded by the desire to experience the best picture and audio available, and to no longer suffer the indignity of the middle tier's inferior 1080p offerings.
