2 weeks ago - I have a vague suspicion that the installer used to offer to add stuff to your system that you had to watch for and opt out of, so I always use the portable version - which was always safe. Not used it for a couple of years, though, so ymmv

October 9, 2025 - If anything looks off (missing signature, wrong folder, VirusTotal shows multiple detections), keep the file quarantined and reinstall from the official HWiNFO site: https://www.hwinfo.com/download/. If the files are in the correct folders, signed by the vendor, and VirusTotal looks clean, this is almost certainly a false positive. You can keep using your hardware monitor safely after verifying.

r/buildapc on Reddit: HWINFO64 QUESTIONS and a false virus postive
February 1, 2023 -

So i got a new gaming pc and just want to check it's thermals while gaming , i downloaded HWINFO64 from the wiki link in this subreddit portable version from the US local server .

My question HWINFO is safe right ? It has two exe one for 32 bit and one for 64 and while scanning virustotal showed the 32 bit one as malicious in a antivirus called secure age . I deleted it but I'm safe right ? I deleted the 32 bit one and start the 64 bit exe , it makes a temp config file next to the portable exe and runs

Also , does hwinfo affect performance, or battery life ? Does it repeatedly ping the GPU or the cpu if the program is shut down ? Does it modify any system settings or clock speed etc or it's purely for showing stats .. just want to check temps during and nothing else , how to set it up for that purpose ?

I'm new at this so any help would be appreciated

July 26, 2024 - Short answer is not a lot. ... it wont effect your PC, but i highly recommend against it... for some unknown reason my cat would just stare at the monitor all the time i had it on, cost me 2k in vets bills just for him to ask "are you running HWinfo64" but try it, YMMV
