With the earlier iPhones I seem to remember that all legitimate Apple lightning cables had a small chip inside them to verify they were legit.
Is this the case with the USB-C cables or are they just all standard cables now? (I know there are different grades of USB-C cables)

There isn’t an MFI standard per se, but different usb c cables will have different features. For example what comes with the iPhones is USB C and supports power delivery, but only 2.0 data speeds.

Hi all. I’ve been thinking about this in the back of my mind for a little while now.
When the iPhone 15’s announcement was first making rounds, I noticed many (predominantly US-based) tech reviewers praising the EU legislation for finally forcing Apple to use USB-C in iPhones. However, to me, this doesn’t fully make sense.
As I understand it, the language of the law only applies to products sold in the EU. Apple has shown before that they can and will make different hardware models for different regions of the world e.g. dual physical SIM for HK/China, single SIM for other countries, e-SIM only for USA, etc. just to name a few.
They could have just made an EU-designated model with USB-C, and kept lightning for that sweet MFi money for the other regions like they did with the SIM types. But they didn’t, and instead added USB-C to all models, internationally. Why do you think that is?

I’m by no means an expert but I’d imagine it’s just easier and more cost effective to make the sweeping change to USB-C in all markets, rather than one for Europe and another for the U.S etc

I think the EU legislation was the small push that Apple needed. I know that they’ve shown that they can make variations of products for different regions, but in this case, I don’t think Apple was far off from doing it anyway. They’ve been using USB-C on different products anyway, and I think the EU legislation was enough to make them say “Okay, let’s just do it”. They can now position it as “one chord for all products” (because they already have it on other products) and move along.

Regarding charging, all USB-C cables will deliver at least 60W per the USB-C standard. The iPhone 15 takes 20W officially, 27W unofficially. This means that any USB-C cable is sufficient for charging the iPhone 15. All that matters is the power adapter that you use. The USB-C cable that comes with the iPhone 15 uses USB 2.0, so it will transfer data at 480Mbps. This is the maximum possible on the base iPhone 15 models. If you have a Pro, you can transfer data at 10Gbps if you get yourself a USB-C cable that uses USB 3.2. This will have no effect at all on charging speed, just data transfer.
