r/MacOS on Reddit: With the support of MacOS Ventura likely ending this year, what can be done with an old MacBook Pro 2017?
January 2, 2025 -

As far as I know there are four options available:

  1. continue using the old unsupported MacOS,

  2. downloading a newer MacOS through Open Core Legacy Patcher,

  3. downloading Linux,

  4. and working on the MacBook through a Virtual Machine.

However…

  • I have read that using an old MacOS is unsafe (Is it really if you just browse reputable sites through FireFox and only download items from reputable sources?),

  • I don’t know if OCLP is compatible with real software (apps from AppStore or from a recognized 3rd party like AutoCAD),

  • there are issues with Linux lacking drivers for newer Macs and non existent power management,

  • and what is the performance like working on a Mac through a VM?

The hardware still works and the battery health is Normal, so I don’t feel like there’s a reason to upgrade.

Who else is still running Ventura?
Is there a reason that you are onn 13.2.1 instead of the last version of Ventura? Being a casual user isn't really a reason to ignore security fixes. Your version of Ventura is now 3 years old. The last version for Ventura came out at the end of 2025, 13.7.8 More on reddit.com

With the support of MacOS Ventura likely ending this year, what can be done with an old MacBook Pro 2017?
I’m still using Macs with MacOS versions that haven’t been supported for years - I have software and hardware that just won’t work on newer Macs/MacOS. Plus it just seems wrong to me to bin stuff that still works. This has never caused me any issues. I’m pretty sensible about not doing anything ‘risky’ and have never had a virus or other tech nasty on a Mac in 30 odd years. I’m not necessarily recommending it, just sharing my perspective. Apple no longer providing security update… - Apple Community
December 2, 2025 - Any justification (aka "excuse") by TurboTax that it's because Apple no longer provides updates to Ventura is disingenuous on the part of TurboTax.
