r/kitchenremodel on Reddit: Feedback on marble backsplash
June 29, 2024 -
We want to put marble backsplash as a center piece behind cooktop (infront of range hood). I have heard mixed reviews of using marble backsplash as it may be hard to maintain and susceptible to heat and splats from cooking.
Soliciting feedback from experts and people with marble backsplash. Thanks!

As far as heat resistance is concerned, it’s kind of hard to beat marble. And contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t take much to keep it looking good—a twice-yearly application of an impregnating sealer will greatly up your chances of being able to simply wipe away any food mishaps that would have stained the surface had you not treated it. For normal, day-to-day cleaning, I recommend using a microfiber cloth and a dilute solution of Dawn dish soap and water—just a few drops in spray bottle is all you need for most cleanup (really!) and the best part is that this ratio requires no rinsing.

We are close to installing marble backsplashes in our new kitchen. We have yet to find a porcelain subway tile we like as much as a polished marble sample we found. The yearly application of a sealer does not sound great to me,. but it looks as simple as wipe on/wipe off. I wish the wife had just agreed to bring the new quartz tops up the wall.

My Dirty Secret, or How I Learned to Live with a Marble Backsplash - Gardenista
December 10, 2016 - The mystery, as my husband pointed out, was: why did this happen in the first place? All across America, people have lovely marble backsplashes above stoves, unsullied by horrible yellow grease stains. We wondered if ours had been sealed improperly. We phoned the installer, who said (no surprise) that he was shocked by this problem and had never heard of it before.

I'm trying to find backsplash tiles that my husband and I both like which is not easy. The ones we agree on most are marble. I'm looking for shorter tile approx 2x6in. Polished picket or similar that has variations of white. I'm worried about having to seal marble and possible staining. If you have a marble backsplash, do you regret it? I'm wondering if I should keep searching for ceramic or porcelain.

DON'T DO IT I had these marble tiles I LOVEd as backsplash. I sealed them all the time. It didn't matter. The heat from the range damaged the ones around the stove and the water damaged the ones behind the sink no matter what I did. I hate marble backsplash and marble countertops with heat of a ten thousand suns :) Here is a photo. Look behind the stove top ( I sold this house in March and got quartz for countertops and backsplash in the new one).

In general marble is a complete nightmare when it comes to staining. I had a bathroom sink counter that was marble and we ripped it out one year after installing it. Everything stained that thing despite sealing it. It’s undoubtedly gorgeous, but you have to ask yourself if you want to use a notoriously high-maintenance material in an area of the house that is high risk for colorful splashes of tomato sauce, curry, wine, oils, etc. There are so many materials now that come very close to the natural beauty of marble without the headache.
